    Introduction to conversation

Hello, my name is Stephen and I go by the alias mojo. After reading a few threads I've come to greatly respect your community and knowledge contained within. I've come here to make friends, find advice and to help others (I love to brainstorm).

To start off, I'm an awful writer. I went to a trade school for design and totally missed out on college level writing classes. I know it's not too late to go back but it's just not possible in my current circumstances. The problem is I want to write. I have so many stories floating around my head and I don't even know where to begin. I been working on a few worlds, some going on for 10 years now. None of them are in story form but as notes, snowflakes and lore. When I do try to write it either sounds like a children's book or a history lesson.

I feel I have the talent to 'design' a decent story but I've come to the conclusion that I don't have the knowledge to put it to words, it's like trying to build a castle with sticks and mud.

Hi Stephen, and welcome to WF. Don't worry, being with fellow writers helps improve writing to a great extent. Stick around and I'm sure you'll find yourself a better writer in a few months' time.

    Enjoy the site!

If I could build a castle with sticks and mud I'd be a very happy little Vegemite.

There's nothing hard about writing: you just sit down at the keyboard and open a vein.

Seriously, four years ago I didn't know dick about writing. Today, without ever having taken a formal class, I just occasionally cobble something together that passes. And I'm 75.

You too can become a writer, Mojo.

Welcome to the forums! You know, you don't have to write how everyone else writes. I mean... a lot of people on these forums I see write what I consider 'formaly'. It may not make sense to anyone else, but it does to me. Like, I write in first person so I say it how he would think. And, my style of writing is like a conversation. I also like to make my main character question things, like, "
Mia is the person I'm talking about, she's the only one I'm interested in. I'm not going to talk to some random sick patient and get to know him. Why would I want to do that?"

You will find your way. Just start writing and you'll find your style. You suck? Well, you should've seen how much I sucked at first. The only way to get better is to write!
What's the fun in being a circle among other circles? I want to be a square.

That's a good way to think about it Dramatism. I tend to lean more to the abstract with my art, using shapes and colors to create a feeling. I've experimented by applying that to words with some interesting results.

I keep feeling as if writing is something foreign I need to mimic rather than something that comes from me. You have inspirited me with your notion, thank you.
