    Looking for a buddy

    Hello everyone,

I am an aspiring writer. I have been hanging out on several writing forums for the past year but am just now joining one. Truth be told, I have not had good experiences with forums in the past but this is the first writing forum I have joined so I hope my experience here will be better.

I am new to fiction. I have written some historical articles in the past which have appeared on websites and in newspapers. I have spent over a year researching my current project and am now at the point where it is time to write. I have finished chapter 1 and I was very encouraged by the way Chapter 1 came out. I think it is great for a first draft of a first time fiction writer. Chapter 2 is not coming out so smoothly. Part of it is the setting and that fact that is it what I call an information chapter, where the main character and reader learns a lot of very important information to go forward with the story. Part of the problem is also me and my lack of experience.

I have a great avid imagination. I can see the story unfolding in my mind like a movie but I have problems putting it to paper sometimes. I also have a lot to learn when it comes to Grammar and formatting. I have been reading up on both but I find the best way to master any skill is to just do it which I am working on now.

Anyway, my main goal for joining this forum to find myself a writing buddy, someone whom I can share thoughts with and bounce idea's off of and vis versa. I have a lot to learn and I could really use constructive feed back and advise on my writing going forward. I realize building such a relationship will take time but every journey begins with a single step. My main area of interest in fiction is Science Fiction. However, I have also in the past enjoyed some Horror novels and a friend of mine has recently got me into a few Graphic Novels which have never been into until now.

I am looking forward to my time here.

Hi Quasar. I'm sure you'll find what you need here, just hang around long enough. Welcome to WF!

Cool, well, welcome to WF! Remember to critique other stories, so people are more likely to look at yours, and have fun!
Scribbled the Raven in the dark, amongst the shallow gloom, "I am the one that goes bump in the night."
"A Love/Hate/Really-Really-Hate relationship between a boy, a ghost, and the monstrosity that will stop at nothing to end them." Check out Life/Finale in the sci-fi/fantasy/horror sections!

I can sympathize with your desire for someone to discuss writing with. Frankly I'm not too interested in sharing my work and recieve critisism, and I don't really have the patience to read and critique other people's work. On the other hand, I'm all for talking theory and exchanging ideas.

Thank you, I really appreciate the welcome. I think my biggest problem with writing is a common one, CONFIDENCE! I think once I get into things more that confidence will come or at least I hope it does. I think constructive criticism is important but at the same time, I really hate it when someone completely picks your work apart telling you everything that is wrong and mentions nothing that is right. I think that it is just as important for a young writer to know what they are doing right as well as wrong so that they don't get discouraged and give up. Confidence in your writing, like so many other things in life, is a very important key to success in my opinion. I have already gotten some responses on here and had someone look at my Chapter 2 which I feel so badly about. To my amazement, they didn't have as big of a problem with it as I did. Sure it is not perfect as they said but it also is a serviceable first draft. That fact gave me confidence to keep going, to just keep writing even when I think things are not going good.

Welcome to WF! I too understand the confidence problem. I was doing short weekly writings on one site but wasn't getting any replies or feedback, it made me feel like no one was reading my work. That's why I found this place though!
