    Newbie checking in :)

Hello, name is Jen, mom, farmer, knitter, and closet wordsmith. I've been writing forever. But I'm the master of starting a story and never finishing one. I do have some finished short stories but only a handful. I have countless discs and notebooks full of stories that were never finished. I go back every once in a while and edit something and add a few chapters but never seem to gain closure. I think sometimes it is the act of writing itself that I enjoy, not necessarily the completion. I free write, which is probably why I never finish anything. I just recently started writing seriously again and this time (first time!) I have somewhat of an outline going. It is new territory. I never hold any illusions that I'll publish one day but at this time I feel not disappointment from that.

I enjoy many genres of books and am open to most anything except romance and horror (I'm a chicken.) But my favorite authors are Patricia McKillip, Charles DeLint, Neil Gaiman and others in the urban fantasy genre. I just recently discovered Kevin Hearnes and immensely enjoyed his Iron Druid Chronicles. I grew up reading hard core sci-fi and high fantasy before branching out to more fun fantasy. My first real series of books I remember reading were the Xanth series (oh and the Myth series with Robert Aspirin.) I've read fiction, non-fiction, documentary, history, oh you name it. I've read some classic literature and while I appreciate it, I don't always relate to it. I like to feel like I'm part of a story, not just along for the ride.

Anyway, that is it, I just googled writing forums today and this popped up I haven't had time yet to check the whole place out but that is my next stop.

    Hi Jen. Welcome to WF.

Not finishing a short seems strange to me, I suppose that for them the idea usually comes with the ending first, longer things I sometimes have a theme I want to explore but have trouble rounding it off. There are all sorts of things for all sorts of people here, an explore round is a good idea.

Hi there Jen, and welcome. Never despair about not finishing a story. I also have lots of notes for books that I started and never ended - doesn't mean a thing. One day you'll finish one and then you have a novel!

Welcome! I too have a hard time finishing a series that I start. Come to think of it, I've never finished a series I've started...
