Why Hello there, I like your shoes

    I am new!!

My joining has been prompted by a series of temp jobs during my summer holidays from university which have driven me to total boredom...the kind that has made me question whether I actually have a brain or just cotton wool between my ears.

So I decided I'd like to start writing, I used to enjoy it at school but havent done any since. So it's a random notion, and one with which I have no clue where to start.

So tell me, writing experts, where should I start??

    Experts? *Blushes*

Just have a look around and get to know people first, worked well for me. I started off writing a couple of things in school, then never wrote anything again until recently. Reading has obviously helped my grammar, because it was awful at school.

Anyway, I look forward to your work Welcome.

That's one thing, I am a spelling/grammar freak (always dangerous to say, I'm bound to make a mistake almost immediately!!), so will have to try and restrain myself from correcting people too much in the first few days...

Yea, that;s unerstanabled. bt u should rly restrain urself as u said, don#t wont to get on the rong side of people, do ya?

But really, you should definitely correct someones grammar when you are reviewing their work on here, if it's frequently improper. If there are only one or two mistakes, I'll mention them but you can easily let those mistakes slide.

I think you put spaces in between the dots on an ellipsis. . .

    Welcome again.

    Hi, Weeble!

We would be pleased to saturate the cotton wool between your ears with all manner of nonsense. Or writing knowledge...it could happen.

As for where to start, Literary Maneuvers has a flash fiction prompt up for 'Discovering a portal to...' which I keep trying to get an entry written for. We have a couple games you could consider joining in the RPG forum and if you just want to kick around some fun things try the Word Games forum to begin with. Above all, get to know everyone a little!

    Enjoy.

Hi there Msweelble, and welcome. I think you should write about what gets your interest going. That usually helps. For the rest, I don't think you can actually 'learn' how to write - you either do, or don't.

No, I think you're probably right. I have had a go at a few things, and will post when I write something I'm happy with. Until then I'll just keep reading and commenting on others work, which does seem somewhat hypocritical.
