    Smile Hello!!! Advice needed...

Hi! I new to the forum, and I'm really excited!

So, I'm kind of a new writer. I've never finished a piece of work or had anything
properly published....however, I've been working on the same story for years now
but it's barely off the ground.

    That's where my problem is.

I find that I started my book as a hobby, and I now I realize I seriously want
to finish it- if not to publish, at least to feel the accomplishment of completing it.
But I the story is intricate in my head; and I daydream about it more than actually
    putting it to paper.

So......how do I push myself to finish it? How do you stop daydreaming and manifest a story? Any advice???

    Thanks!!!!!!!!

Write about everything and anything. The more you write, the more you improve and the better you become at churning out chapters at a steady pace. Sometimes there's such an overwhelming chunk of ideas floating around that it's hard to make head nor tail of it, we all suffer from that (I think) but I write them down. Every idea I have is in a little Moleskine notebook. So when the time comes, and you start typing away like a schizophrenic secretary, you know where to go with it. It wont be easy but, that's why places like this exist.

Welcome to the forums, there are some great people on here with vital information to give, so you're in good hands. Don't give up, keep writing, keep daydreaming, but don't overdo it either. Slow and steady wins the race.

Here's me sounding like I know what I'm talking about

I'm just as much of an amateur as you, but we're all here to help is what I meant.

Hi there! Imio, when you really want to write a complete novel, you just sit down and do it! (Well, it may take you a while, but who cares?)

Welcome common1! Just sit down and start writing those ideas down, sometimes that will lead you in the right direction. I've found that even if you have a firm idea where you want to go, stories seem to take on a life of their own and lead you in surprising ways.

I feel your sadness and your frown,
    above's the best advice you've heard;
To write's like pooping, you sit down,
..and force out that reluctant turd.

    Hi there budding author,

First, you shouldn't feel you need to 'push' yourself to write. This usually happens when you try to compose the article, story or whatever in your mind before putting it on paper. Big mistake. It's extremely difficult to retain multiple thoughts mentally.

Next, write whatever comes to your mind. Don't try to check your construction, relevance, grammar, and other polishing work at this point. The whole purpose is to get your ideas down as quickly as they are generated.

Then, re-read your jottings and arrange your ideas in logical sequence. Take your time doing this. If other ideas strike you at this time, write them down on a separate piece of paper.

Finally, edit, edit, edit until you are satisfied your words say exactly what you mean.

^^ Thank you all for your advice. I find that I daydream the ideas, then try to put it on paper in one shot (worrying about grammar and all that)--- but when i look back at the writing, I'm never quite satisfied as much as I was when I first wrote it.

I thought I knew how to write - until I started spending time on writing forums!
That is NOT meant to discourage you!
I've spent a lot of time studying everything I can find about writing and created a special folder for that purpose. Every time I come across a link to tips and advice on writing, I go there and usually copy and paste to a document that I save in that folder. I also have an extensive set of bookmarks for such links. So, whenever something doesn't lok right or I get a comment, I have something to go back to.
Ever wonder what they call a bunch of crows? I have a link that shows me what all gatherings of creatures are called. By the way, one is a "Murder of crows."
So, just hang in there. As someone said, whenever you have something you want to write about - WRITE ABOUT IT!
