My debut at Glastonbury,
My debut at Glastonbury,
I have told a few tales in my time, so when I discovered a small space on the map of the Glastonbury Greenfields was labled “storytelling “ I went along, in the morning to see what was what. I discovered a structure made of woven withies in a circle with a conical roof covered in canvas, rather the shape of an iron age round house but less substantial. Inside, pinned to the centre post, I found a notice saying that there was storytelling from 1pm to 5pm followed by a workshop, this was at about 11am. As I was leaving a young couple approached me and asked if I was the story teller, I explained and told them that I would happily tell them an “Unofficial” story if they liked, what sort did they want? “A short one” they replied and I told them “Yannie’s Dragon”, I think it went down well, the girl insisted on having her photo taken with me outside the doorway and they both seemed very pleased. Not the largest audience in the world, but I have played Glastonbury.

Cool. I've watched some of your YouTube videos, and you're definitely a good tale weaver.

Thank's for the compliment. The You Tube stuff is rather different, they are monologues that I have written and know word for word so they come out the same every time, when you tell a story you have to know the basic tale off by heart but then you adapt it to your audience so it comes out differently each time it is told.
I have tried writing down stories like that and they lose a lot, you are either telling the bare bones of the story or including frills which might not be appropriate for all audiences.

Hey Oli! I just watched you on Youtube and it was great to see you in action. For some reason though I was completely unprepared for your South East London accent. I think because of your village life descriptions, your voice in my heady was much more BBC
It just goes to show, you should never make assumptions. I'm glad I got to see the real Oli at work.
I would love to go to Glastonbury, but being free lance means I never know when my next gig is going to be, and I can't justify spending money on festival jaunts. Also, there are no cheap flights anywhere from the Ukraine. There are no cheap carriers
It's excellent that you got to do a little stint at the festival. Maybe next year you can sign up to be part of it for real. I absolutely love story telling. As a child I used to go with my mother to folk festivals and for my brother and I, the story telling tents where always the high light. Every child should have the opportunity to experience something like this, and to be the person who stirs their imaginations is a special honor. A good story and story teller leave deep impressions on children, well they did on me in any case.

You must have watched the Nelson Garvey extract, my accent is much less "London" in the "toothpaste " one, when I was a kid I learned to speak one way at home and another with my mates, I try and use the one that is appropriate.
I was suggesting Glastonbury as a gig rather than a jaunt, it is not a music festival but bills itself as a festival of the performing arts with a whole field devoted to circus with a Big Top and several outside stages and an outside trapeze. There was an Australian act called Flame Oz who do pyrotechnics as bill toppers one night . In your line they included Sarah Miller doing hand balance and contortion, Fidget Feet's Wired and Free, where they present an aerial story, Hard Shoulder, who do double trapeze, Leo and Yam's Knockout , which is a duel on a single rope, The Black Eagles from Tanzania who do a balancing act and Invisible Circus who work on vertical ropes. I don't know if you have heard of any of them? There were lots of other sorts of acts as well of course, The Space Cowboy was the most amazing sword swallower whose climax was swallowing a mercury vapour lamp that you can see glowing inside him, I could go on listing them.
You are right about a good story making an impression, and not only on children sometimes. It's a real buzz when that happens.

Where's the toothpaste one? Changing your accent to suit your environment? You little chameleon you. I'm not one to talk. My mother used to say she could tell who I was talking to on the phone by the voice and vocab I used. The things we do to fit in........
Wow. The sword swallower sounds amazing. You know though, most of those acts live in the UK, including the Black Eagles. The Glastonbury Festival doesn't pay very much apparently so they don't often invite international acts. I will look into it though.

Olly, you're a brilliant speaker. Loved both of those videos. Congrats on doing Glastonbury!
