3 letters and a funeral + retread?

My week has been up and down.

In the mail I received a rejection notice, at least it was polite. Then a second copy my W2 thing for the taxes I already filed stating that the first one was wrong and I needed to refile--oh joy! At least the third was decent, some kind author read a poem I blogged about 7 years ago and asked to put it in one of her books.

On the way to a funeral we hit a huge piece of retread and I can't believe it didn't trash the undercarriage. It seems like there is an awful lot of retread on the interstates these days--should be a law you have to stop and clean it up or call someone?

Had to drive 8 hours to come home and let the house sitter back in after he locked himself out. At least it is a diversion! 8 more hours on the road first thing in the morning--good times.

Where does all the retread come from anyway? You think I'd see more vehicles without tires on the side of the road--people driving around on just wheels?

Don't mind me, I think I need some rest.

You have a horse. You must be doing something right. Anyway, sorry to hear you had a rough day.

Here is my question, though. Why couldn't you get your horse-sitter in the house in another way. They could even break in and replace the window for you (cost less than driving 8 hours I imagine). Anyway, a little confused on that one.

The damn windows are double paned with blinds in between them. The door has a huge single pane of glass in it, but someone broke through it once so I had it replaced with safer glass. That does cost more than a drive home right now.

I don't want to guess how much replacing or fixing those stupid windows would cost, they'd look weird too. You know, being sad, I missed my cat too, and my bed.

As for a house, it seemed like a great idea. Everyone kept saying--oh yeah, renting is terrible, you're throwing money away. So I bought one, the market went to hell and its a big pain the arse. There are foreclosures and squatters all over now. I so wish I was just renting a little crappy apartment. 30 years is a long commitment.

There’s always been a lot of retread on the interstates. Trucks produce most of it, not small vehicles. In the words of the immortal C.W. McCall “a thousand screaming trucks”. What you need to do is put yourself in the trucker’s shoes. He* has perhaps anywhere from eighteen to thirty-six wheels underneath his arse – well, sixteen to thirty-four really - and a few other things on his mind besides whether or not he might throw a tread. Probably 75-80% of the time he doesn’t even know it’s happened. That’s one reason it’s left lying where you find it. Or do you say laying? The other reason is time and distance. If he is forced into a wheel change, by the time the job is done he’s already running late and is in no mood to tramp maybe a half-mile, a mile back down the highway to tidy away the mess.

* For “he” also read “boot-wearing, bra-less, hairy-legged she”. Same rules apply.

Cozy little England with our crowded motorways, every inch covered by cameras, you get an overhead sign, "Obstruction on carriageway" and then a flashing Highways Authority vehicle closing a lane wile it's removed. If the driver walked back he'd likely get nicked for it, if he tried to get out on the highway to remove it he would probably get killed.
