This morning I was making myself a bagel for breakfast. I was kinda lazy, so I didn't get myself a cutting board and instead just held the bagel. Also, I took the first knife I found, which was a steak knife. So the odds were stacked to begin with. I stabbed my hand with the steak knife, not a slice, but a good inch deep in my palm. I bled more than I have in a long time, it spurted a good two inches (onto my bagel, which I never got to eat). I put my hand under water and applied pressure, and within ten minutes it stopped bleeding. I wasn't sure if I hit a tendon or a nerve, but I was sure I needed stitches, so I headed to the ER. They put some glue on the cut and gave me a tetnis (however you spell it) shot.
I called work and told them I wouldn't be able to come in that day because the doctor didn't want me to lift any heavy objects for a week. My job is basically carrying crates up and down stairs, by the way, so I was pretty screwed. So I called my boss, who hates me already because I've had to rearrange my schedule several times, and told her I wouldn't be able to make it. She told me to find someone to cover my shift.
The two other people who work the same shift as me can't make it; one of them is on vacation skiing and the other needed to go to therapy that day.
So I showed up to work today, and tried doing everything with one hand. It didn't work, it's hard to carry heavy stuff with one hand. I've got someone to cover most of my shifts.
Basically, I almost lost my job today because of a fucking bagel.
