    Strange

Had a strange and disturbing event in my left eye yesterday. About midday became aware of a thin line of flashing down the extreme left of my vision in my left eye, similar to a previous occasion when a bit of the retina detached. Late afternoon a heavy dark floater in my left eye developed a ‘tail’. Then there were a lot of dark lines down the left side of my vision, like outline swans, or eddies of a different coloured fluid. This cleared and I am left without the floater but with two patches in my sight that resemble bubbles or dirt on the surface of the eye, one is steady and moves with my eye, the other moves in relation to the first when I move my eye. I have an eye clinic on Thursday, no doubt they will tell me what is happening.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good, Olly. Hopefully, Thursday will give you some answers and some way of treating this.

All is well, or relatively so, the floater breaking up and the retina are separate issues, they just happened to occur at the same time, neither are serious, though I shall "Keep an eye on things" In fact the sight has improved enough in my right eye (the one I went to that clinic for originally) that they are discharging me and I will be looked after eye-wise at Moorfields from now on.

Glad to hear it. Sight is such a precious gift, and it's terrifying when something goes wrong with it.

Yes, I have had a bit happen to me and sight related ones are not life threatening or anything, but they are by far the most scary, fear 'aint rational.

Glad to hear that it wasn't as ominous as it seemed.

Concur. I'd be horrified if anything happened to my eyesight. I already dislike the fact I need to wear glasses now.

I was in the VA Hospital with a former Jarhead older than myself. He went blind in his twenties. An alcoholic, apparently he drank rubbing alcohol I think it was, and it caused him to lose his eye sight a day or two later. I never knew that could happen.

And not that I'm one for the doctor, at least not for every minor problem, but this reminds me of athletes like boxers that are told they have developed eye damage and should retire from their sport or risk going blind, but disregard doctor's advice and jump back in. Some things money can't buy. Some fame ain't worth it. Hey, even if you love your profession time to move on. Get another occupation. Maybe train people instead.

The alcohol thing is methyl alcohol instead of ethyl, Writ. Every so often some smart-arse thinks they will make some easy money by diluting something like vodka with methyl alcohol that doesn't have duty charged on it, one of the dangers of back street cheap booze. Your acquaintance was lucky it didn't kill him, a bit more and he wouldn't have had a functioning liver any more.
