I just returned from a week in Bali. My Australian visa expired so I had to leave the country and then come right back on a new one. I'd heard alot about Bali and it is a popular holiday destination in this part of the world, so I found a cheap flight and checked it out. I was a bit disappointed.
The beach city of Kuta was my first stop, but it was a sleezy dump - drug dealers and pimps roamed the streets hassling tourists for business and the traffic was appalling. I left for Ubud, which was more peaceful and had a relaxing time sitting by the pool reading, eating good local food, and wandering around the town.
But for a place that gets so much hype, it wasn't what I expected. It's a great place to go with your mates, drink cheap beer and party, but the days of a tranquil island paradise are gone. Still I was on holiday so it was a great week, but next time I'll go somewhere else.
