Does anyone here like pet rats?!

I have 5 pet rats, Smelly, (male) & his 'wife" Twinkle & his brothers, Stinky, Pongy & Badger & Twinkle & Smelly recently became parents so now there's another 12 babies! We keep the 3 doors of the cage open so they can come & go as they please in the flat & Smelly sometimes gets into bed with us!

Does anyone else here like rats enough for such things?! The fancy rats are so nice to have & are very cute & adorable so if any of you are thinking of getting pet rats then do it! They are such lovely pets to have around!

I bet I'm going to be getting some very negative comments from this thread...oops!

HA! I love being a nutcase! As proof of being a certified nut I eat, each & every night, a large raw garlic clove before bed! Partly to help with the old ticker (nothing wrong with it that I know of but it helps to keep it healthy!) & partly as I just love garlic anyway!

My poor M is slowly getting used to it...but the rats like it too! More nutters!

Rats make good pets. I had a pet rat when I was a kid. He was very smart and affectionate.

Many years later, I bought a ball python. Not nearly as smart or affectionate. He ate small rats.

I wanted a pet rat for a while but my parents said no. I have two dogs and at some stage I would like to get a pet pig.

I would not mind having a pet rat. They are actually rather clean. Had a few on me at a ren faire, they were perfectly friendly.

Rats are cute and fine as pets. I've just never had any type of rodents as pets. Dealt with them a lot when I worked at a pet shop years ago and they were nice. Well, hamsters aren't so nice. Got bit by one of those buggers. I don't think I'd want a rat crawling into bed with me because I'd be too scared of smooshing it while I sleep.

Not a rat fan. We had these things called tree or roof rats in out attic. There was a surge of them where I live -- they went from house to trees to house and made their way into any crack or hole they could get into. We had to have our house rat-proofed, at some cost. They're different from the more common Norway or wharf rat. They have big eyes and kind of puffy little cheeks, so they're kind of cute. Even so, I took some pleasure in killing them all.

My friend told me that she owned a rat when she was young. Yuck. lol. I don't like mice either. My cat would leave little half-eaten mice outside of my bedroom door! Gawd, I hated living in the country with my grandfather for that time in my life. My mom told me that my cat was just showing me how much he loved me! (it was his present to me) ha ha. Yah right. It didn't feel like it when I stepped on a half-eaten mouse stumbling my way to the washroom in the morning!!! ha ha.

Sunny, that's not something that happens only in the country. My mother is allergic to cats, but she's not one to turn away any animal in need. So, growing up, we had a stray cat that lived around our house. My dad caught her once in order to take her to the vet to be spayed. We had a box that we fixed up with an old blanket so she'd have somewhere to sleep and in the winter, during the occasional cold spell, we'd put a heating pad in there for added warmth. We fed her as well and she was as friendly as a feral cat could be. Our dogs didn't mind her at all, but would go nuts if another cat walked by. Every now and then she'd find a mouse in the shed in the backyard and she'd leave it at the front door as a gift. Certainly not something to enjoy when you walk outside first thing in the morning to fetch the newspaper.

That was very kind of your family to take care of the cat. I'm like that, too. I saw a dog running the streets one time... it was after midnight when I was out on a late night walk. Others were just walking past it, not caring. I was scared it was going to get run over. He came to me easily enough and I took him home. I found his owners from his tag and they picked him 20 minutes later. (they were frantic.) It's a nice feeling to help the helpless.

I can't even squish a spider without squealing and jumping around on my tiptoes... so picking up a dead mouse by the tail, looking like something left over from a horror movie was traumatising!! ha ha.
