    Surprise through the post today

Through the post today I received my first letter of acceptance from an editor. Buzzing? You don't know the half of it. It's for my short story, England, My Home, and its Legend of Eternal Happiness. It's been accepted by a small short fiction anthology, published quarterly, called Debut. You've guessed it, it's for previously unpublished authors. Yeah, author sounds good--so much more than writer.

The editor says he'd like to shorten the title as it's a bit wordy, but that doesn't particularly bother me. I might see if we can compromise, he wants to call it Eternal Happiness, I'll ask him if he could go with The Legend of Eternal Happiness, but I'm not too fussed.

Big thank you to the people on here who helped me realise this ambition.

Next goal is to win a competition with a cash prize, or maybe sell a story, as this one doesn't pay.

Seems like my mum was right all those years ago, hard work gets you there in the end.

The sand of the desert is sodden red, -
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; -
The Gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranks,
"Play up! play up! and play the game!"

Very good. From what I've seen, you should be able to make the rest of those ambitions happen. Keep submitting, don't get discouraged.

Nice one Scott. It won't be too hard now to get working on the next step up, and when you've got a fair few under your belt, you can look seriously at your own collection of short stories being published.
