Doo do doo do doo do do do do!
If you can't tell right off the bat, that's the beginning of that Mary Tyler Moore theme tune.
I got word today (albeit indirectly) that I've been accepted to the private college that I've been thinking about for software engineering. Even better, they're offering me forty thousand dollars on an engineering scholarship (again, to my incomplete knowledge).
So I'm quite giddy right now, because I didn't think I was going to make it in to this particular school; sub-par GPA and all. But it goes to show that an excellent SAT score will make up for it.
My advice to anyone applying for colleges: apply where you'd like to go. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Good deal, Shawn. SAT scores count for a lot. Congratulations.

As one who never wanted to do anything I can’t even begin to understand how you might feel, but because someone here said I can learn to be nice, and because from what I’ve observed at times like this one says congratulations, congratulations.

Congratulations, Shawn
When you first said it was a private school, I groaned. They seem to charge excessive amounts for degrees that don't mean much more than state degrees. However, I'm sure you're better researched than to throw darts at engineering schools too

Indiana Tech. They're really the only school in my area that have a project based major in software. I'll actually be working while I'm at school; but that will be a big part of my units... 40 out of 120 or so.

You're right, it is a ridiculous amount of money (120k total, actually); but I figure it would be better for me to get work experience while I'm in school, develop my professional portfolio, and be paraded around employers in my senior year. Cost is really no object to me (though I know I'll regret saying that).

Holy crap, Shawn. Student loans are hell (not as bad as personal loans and credit cards, but still hell). You'll want to research what the payments are going to versus your projected salary first--and then stock up scholarships.

Btw, have you researched how the area treats gays? Some campuses are exceptionally friendly, but with private schools.. well, it seems that they vary more than state run schools

Starting salaries in the field go between 60-90k... but, still, I'm probably going to graduate school; maybe Stanford if I can pull it off; and that will put me in a position to go

Most of my social life will be off-campus. I lived in Fort Wayne for about a year (combined), and a lot of that time was spent socializing. So I feel pretty safe there. The school's smack in the middle of the "safe" part of town... and it's nice, if you disregard the fact that it's flanked by a cemetery and the car-wrecker.

Sounds like a plan
Btw, I've heard some interesting stories about college students and cemeteries (IE students running naked through cemeteries)

I just realized I didn't finish my sentence. Ha!
In any case, graduate school will help me get above 100k.
And, yes, cemeteries are fun.

I'm curious as to the reason why you're staying in-state if your goal is to attend Stanford as graduate school. Way back in the dark ages when I was in the same situation, I had in-state offers and out-of-state offers and chose the latter. But then, athletics were involved in that decision.
