Waving bye-bye to the trolls...

You know, the trolls in Norway. Har har.

After two years -- two long, stressful, educational, and dare I say enjoyable years -- I'm leaving Europe to go back to America. Tomorrow morning, the boyfriend and I are off to Oslo for one more day of unadulterated fun, and then Wednesday morning, at 7:40 AM, I'm headed for home. Well, London. Then Newark. Then Pittsburgh. Then home.

If you'll pardon the cliché, it feels like I just got here yesterday.

I spent three months in Denmark, three in Sweden, and then I finally settled down in Norway. Why that is, I don't really know. Every time someone asks me why I moved to Norway, I never have a good answer. It's somewhat embarrassing, actually. My explanation makes it sound like I just threw darts at a map and settled on the country I hit first (which is actually a lie because I hit Namibia first).

I went to the store today to buy a CD I've been wanting, as well as a package of haugpølse (yummy Norwegian sausage) to take home with me, and as I was walking home, trying not to break my neck on the icy sidewalks, I watched the sun set over the mountains. It seemed an appropriate setting for a farewell -- the chill in the air, the sunset, the patches of melting snow and ice. It made me feel just a little sad, to be honest.

That said, however, I'm more than ready to get going. While I'm quite certain I'll continue to curse fluently in Norwegian for years to come, I'm thrilled at the prospect of speaking English on a regular basis again. The thought of not stumbling over my words, not worrying about my accent, and not having to ask people to repeat themselves so many times is so wonderful I think it'll take some getting used to again.

Plus, my best friend, my mother, and two of my neighbors have called to inform me that they intend to beat the shit out of me for leaving the first place. See all that I have to look forward to?

To sum it all up: Boo-freakin'-yah! Ha det bra, Norge!

The only thing I'm surprised about is this: The fact that it took you two years to get the hell out of there! Two weeks and I'da been gone. Good luck! See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!

Glad you're coming back, Tia

I can't imagine living in Norway--Indiana's cold enough for me.

Sounds like a pretty cool experience. I'm pretty jealous, actually. And I think it seems more adventurous that you don't really have a solid reason for going there.

Enjoy your trip home.

At least someone's smart enough to get out of this icy hell hole. You don't have room for another person, do you? I don't eat much? I don't take up much space? I am house broken? I even take myself for walks!

Kayleigh, you might be surprised at how much you miss your native country when you leave. Though I'm sure it helped that my boyfriend started out as one of the most anti-American twats you'd ever care to meet, so naturally, I got defensive when he'd get into one of his moods.

W.Dude, house broken, you say? Hmm... how are you at contortionism? I do have an extra suitcase I wasn't planning on having to bring...

You would be surprised where I could find room. Just throw me some food and water now and then, and I'm all good!

Consider this an early Welcome Home, T! And here I've only ever been on a plane once, and that never left Canada.

I'd love to learn how to curse in Norwegian. If you want, just send a PM. And please include the phonics.

Thanks everyone for the well wishing! Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Hawke, I think I will PM you, just 'cause I think it'll amuse me to share my deep, philosophical knowledge on Norwegian swear words. (Phonetics might be tough, but I'll have a go at that too...)

Malone, to answer your question, the boyfriend stays here. It wasn't going to work anyways--he can't live with an agnostic and I can't live with someone who defines 'cleaning' as taking the empty milk cartons off the table and heaving them across the room.

I am freaking jealous that you stayed in a place I have wanted to visit for years....

Much too cold of a land for me *shivers* But then it's getting cold in the Northeast too. Doesn't sound like you'll have a heap of separation anxiety. Good luck to you.
