Sad business

I have just finished burying the rabbit. He was lying on his side this morning, barely breathing, I took him to the vet, expecting the final injection, but he died on my lap in the waiting room. He was old for a rabbit, we got him when my daughter was a little girl, but well loved. He is under thee apple tree in the back garden now, and I am feeling sadder than I ought to for a rabbit.

I'm really sad for you, Olly. It's not silly to be sad for a rabbit - I love ours, Harry Snapper Organs, and we've only had him six months. At least your dear old bunny died in your lap, peacefully.

Don't feel silly for being sad for bunny. I cried when my first pet White's tree frog died. Yes, I cried over a frog, but she was an awesome frog.

Aww, that's so sad. I've never had a pet die in my lap before, but I can imagine it being an experience I'd rather not have. Poor bunny. I'm sorry, Olly.

At least you know now that your bunny is in Bunny Heaven, where he will be reincarnated as a Killer Rabbit or Bugs Bunny or Roger Rabbit

Pets are family members. Our little girl bunny had to have a hysterectomy because her reproductive organs became cancerous. Cost a lot of money but that was a year ago and she's still fine.
As I've stated before, rabbits are great pets. They're quiet and mostly nondestructive and small (usually) and fuzzy and cute. I feel for your loss, Olly. Our bunnies have a show now-http://knittingkitties.camstreams.com/
Are you gonna get another lagomorph?

I'm sorry Olly. The day we took our dog to be put down was one of the worst. We all cried on and off for days.

I currently own two dogs, both of whom are relatively young. They are my first real pets (I don't count fish). My wife has observed that the day the older of the dogs dies is going to be very rough in our house. The funny thing is, she said it before we had kids. She has dealt with losing pets, I have not; I think she accurately predicts that I will be a mess. Even though I tend not to show much normal emotion, it is embarassingly obviously when I'm upset; even though I think few, other than my wife, would be able to figure out what it is that bothers me.

Now, fielding questions from my oldest daughter about the dogs' eventual demise nearly puts me in tears. Her bottom lip quivers when she says, "but I'll miss him", even though I don't think she really grasps the idea of death. It will be the double injury of dealing with her pain, coupled with my own, that will make the death of the stupid little beast completely unbearable for me.

I guess the short version of this post would be, "I fully understand and extend my sympathies".

Thanks everyone, in the event my daughter was the one who was least affected, I think because when she came home there was a mound under the apple tree and that was it. Guess the lesson, if there is one , is tell your kids about death, sure , it's realistic, but no need to show them it, I'm quite glad she wasn't there.

Sorry to hear that Olly. I held a pet while it was put down, so I can also relate.

Sorry. I know how you feel and it's horrible. No such thing as sadder than you ought to feel, especially for a family member - no matter what its species.
