My book was rejected

Yep, that's right. I sent a manuscript to the publisher back in late May, and they finally let me know that they won't be publishing it. Oh, well.

But that's alright. I'll use the opportunity to improve the book, send it to someone else and think about who should star in the eventual movie. I mean I know the book is the best book ever written, so of course there will be a movie eventually. People are not idiots.

Relax, it's not like I expected the first publisher I found to publish it. I'll just improve the book, send it to someone else, get it back, improve it, send it someone else and so on until someone publish it.

How much feedback did they give you on your rejection?

Not that much. They said they had received a lot of manuscripts and my book didn't fit into their publishing plans. But they also said it wasn't a bad book, so I should try to send it to someone else, and they would be happy to receive another one of my manuscripts. Which doesn't mean they want to publish that one either, but at least they sound pretty nice.

Just wondering... what publishing company did you send it to? And what kind of works do you write (genre)

I'm from Norway, so I dout you have heard about the company. It's a crime thing that takes place both in the present and thirty years earlier with the same characters. The past-thing is quite supernatural, and the present sci-fi stuff with genemodified creatures and so on.

If I read the letter correctly, they liked the book, but it doesn't quite fit into their publishing plans. Oh, well.

Sorry, brosef. Hang in there.

Did you write it in English? Why not send it to American agents/publishers?

Yeah, because you can write english quite well.

And the idea of the book sounds pretty cool.. like what kind of supernatural stuff?

I live in Norway, so I wrote it in norwegian.

The supernatural stuff is mostly a curse. Five friends (all female, by the way) are having fun in Mardi Gras and visit a fortune teller. They get the obvious fortunes like meeting a tall, dark prince who could be deadly, one will die and so on. Four of them don't take the fortunes seriously, but the one is told she will die are pretty scared. They decide to scare the fortune teller, but something goes wrong and they end up giving her a heart attack. She was old, after all.

Then the fortunates starts to come true, one after another. But is it just coincidences, or is it something more too it? That's the question.

Apparently not interesting enough to be published, though... But it's their loss. I know it will outsell Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Star Wars combined, and that's enough for me. I'm saving the big success for the next book.

That's a real bummer, W. Dude. I'm not especially familiar on how the publishing industry works in Norway (you know, since I won't be getting published for anything I write in Norwegian, like, ever). Have you tried getting an agent instead of navigating the slushy waters yourself?

Getting an agent? I have never even thought about that. Isn't that expensive? And how would I do that anyway?

valeca is an unknown quantity at this point
You'd do it the same way you found/chose the publisher you sent your work to--a little research. Expensive? Not really. I believe it's somewhere in the ballpark of 10-15% depending on the agent. Ideally there shouldn't be any upfront costs, and all agent fees should be deducted from the payment from the publisher, not from your pocket.
