You know that's gonna come back and bite you in the ass, right? You probably won't even notice when it happens to you.

Mermaid, it's pretty damned hard not to get angry or emotional over a break up. It may be better in the long run, but it's awfully hard to see that at the time. Have you ever been through a really nasty breakup?

No, not too nasty, Joseph. But I am generally pretty laid back about it. If somebody wants away, then go away, if you understand my way of thinking about it.

I think that if you've been with somebody for any real length of time and have formed a close bond as well as developed problems along the way, then the pain and anger and whatever else comes in. I am not exactly having a different relationship every day either so I don't really put myself in the line of fire.

The first time my ex broke it off (yes the first time) I had gone over to the apartment to get the rest of my things. At the time I wasn't driving so he had to take me home once I was done packing up. By the time I was done with the first box he was past drunk. So of course I flipped out hating the idea of having to call my parents at 2 am to come pick me up when I had assured them I could get home. His reaction was to poor his beer on me, then throw the bottle at the wall. Then he took his machete with its metal and leather casings through the window behind. He then called 911 hysterically saying I was going to kill myself because he was leaving me. Holy hell was I pissed. We screamed at eachother the entire 30 minutes it took for the firetrucks to show up. At some point he had called my mom and told her I was a bitch and he wanted me out of the apartment. The escalation happened so fast and looking back I can't believe I acted the way I did. Once he was wasted I should have just called my parents and gotten the hell out of there. I knew he was violent....But at 19 I really thought I could handle myself.

Well, Mermaid, I hope you never do have to go through one. If you do, and you can be philosophical about it, more power to you.

Hopefully my breakup days are over. I can't imagine going through a divorce.
