Saturday out

Our daughter is away at a festival for the weekend and we drove over to the long man at Wilmington, he is cut in the chalk and was there when the Romans came, earlier this evening there was a program called Britain from the air that I caught by chance, as I tuned in they were saying that it was possible to date a similar figure, something to do with exposure to light of the turned earth, and that it had been there 3000 years. Even more remarkably, the figures only remain if they are regularly cleaned, otherwise grass would grow over them. So through all the famines and pestilence, wars and invasions of the last 3000 years local people regularly went up the hill and cleaned them. It’s a steep hill and there is a wonderful view from the top across the Cuckmere valley. We met cows and sheep roaming and saw flowers and butterflies that would not come down to our wooded clay weald. Then we had tea in an olde worlde tea shop in Alfriston (which is full of them), walked around the village briefly and then went home, a pleasant afternoon.

I have never heard of the long man, so I just looked it up. I have seen pictures but never realized the history behind it. Thanks for teaching me something new today Sounds like a great time.
