I can't be the only weirdo that does this...

Does anybody else love thunderstorms?

Yesterday, a distant rumble outside the window drew my attention to the sky, and when I saw the cloud formations and the way the wind whipped the trees around like their trunks were made of elastic, I knew a good storm was on the way. So I did what any normal storm-lover would do.

I went outside and sat in the grass to watch it approach.

There really is nothing quite like watching the clouds slowly darken and feeling the way the air sizzles with anticipation. And the smell--I love the smell of a storm brewing. It's second only to the smell when the storm actually arrives.

When the clouds broke, I retreated to the porch (because it was too chilly for me to justify getting drenched) and my boyfriend joined me. A few flashes of lightning later and I couldn't keep the grin from my face.

My boyfriend started pacing, casting timorous glances to the sky. Minutes passed and the storm grew more intense. I continued to sit on the porch, gasping in delight with each purple-white flash that snaked across the sky and waiting for the subsequent rumble to tickle the pit of my stomach.

Just after another bolt, my boyfriend fled for the door.

"There was only two seconds between the lightning and the thunder. It's not safe out here."

"Oh, come on," I said. "It's not nearly as cool to watch a storm from inside. You lose the whole effect."

Another loud boom interrupted him and he inched farther into the house.

"It's dangerous!" he shouted over the rain.

"And it's worth it!"

While he glared at me, a bolt of lightning, accompanied almost immediately by a deafening clap, struck somewhere close enough that I could actually feel the air reverberating with the force of it.

A second later, the door slammed shut and I was alone on the porch. It lasted for over an hour and I only went back inside when the thunder had reduced to a low hum on the horizon. Thereupon I had to the boyfriend rant about how I could've died and so forth.

Tell me I'm not the only one that likes to be 'in' the thunderstorm.

Oh, of course you're not Tiamat. I know loads of people who do, including myself, but seeing as we live in Britain, a change of weather is exciting to all of us

I think the whole idea of the weather being interesting and doing various things such as making that loud whooshing sound and then the thunder crackling away is what draws me in. I love it most when it rains aswell though, because I'm fascinated by rain anyway.

I also, however, know some people who will stay inside. Your boyfriend is right, it's probably dangerous to do it, but it's worth it.

Tom.

I'm with you on this one, Tiamat. There is something fascinating about watching a storm blow up, something seductive about the quality of the air...the pressure, maybe, the smell, the promise of it.

I remember standing watching a storm brewing when I was standing outside my dorm at college. You hear about clouds 'roiling' but rarely get to see it. I stood there as people streamed past me going for shelter, feeling the first fat drops of rain, watching the yellowish-gray cloud drama right overhead and only went in at the last minute.

My husband and his family love storms, too, and they took the entertainment seriously. When a storm looked to be blowing up they'd get Dairy Queen sundaes and go to the garage (it overlooked a huge valley) and sat on the bumper of the car eating and watching through the open garage door, commenting on the light show as the lightning strikes came down.

I love the smell of rain when you're standing on concrete. It's like you can feel it in the air. However, I like the rain best when I have someone else there, seeing as I get scared and like to clutch people.

You're scared of rain? How do you shower?

We had a great big one the other day too. My boyfriend and I sat in the livingroom with the doors wide open, watching it. We don't have a porch or garage where we could watch from or we would have.

It's the smell, the sound, the wind, all of it. I love them too!

You're definitely not alone. I absolutely love the sound and light show - there's nothing quite like it.

At the first flash of lighting I head to a windowless room (the bathroom) with a flashlight and wait until it's over. I am scared to death of a storm.

Awww, that's a real shame. My aunt does that too. And she brings her dog so she has something to clutch during the 'worst' parts.
