Old Fashioned Beach Vacation

This past weekend, we went on an old fashioned Florida beach vacation. No DisneyWorld or Universal. We stayed at a classic, 1960’s era beach motel called “The Buccaneer” on St. George Island on the Panhandle, part of what is known as the “Redneck Rivera.” There aren’t many of these old motels left. Most have been demolished to make room for high-rise hotels and condos. It was bare bones and a little "rustic."

Both my wife and I went on similar Florida trips when we were children. And our folks did when they were children. The kids had a great time on the beach; playing with buckets and shovels and collecting shells. We read, walked on the beach and ate fresh seafood -- right off the boat. All that fun; and we managed to avoid the Evil Mouse. This time.

Hey, now that you mention it, there aren't any of me. That hurts my feelings. Maybe the old lady is trying to tell me something.

Sounds like a great time! I love those vacations, much like our beach vacation--simple and family-oriented.

There exists only 3 pictures of me from the entire week (one of which I posted on my profile) and the other two are Old Time Photos which we paid to have taken. I guess that's what happens when you're the family photographer.

Sounds just like my childhood holidays...

Of course, here, rain and fish and chips also figure.

*warm sigh*

Joe, the weather sucks here at the minute. Quit it, already! You're making me jealous.

Sounds like a good time was had by all.

Good looking family. Where's daughter number two? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume she's making a sandcastle out of frame, rather than locked away in a basement being fed a steady diet of Baby Ruths. She's too cute for a basement, if I remember correctly.

I can never see anything in the profile pictures. They're too small, and I can't figure out how to make them bigger.

And Joe, your wife likes like a movie star.

Thanks!

It's pretty easy, go to your profile and on the left you'll see EDIT PROFILE and you can go in there and edit your profile picture. I like it because you have to click on the member's profile to see it, rather than an avatar that everyone sees.

Did you see--my daughter is higher than my chin now--damn! I'm going to have to trade her in for a smaller model.

Malone, we brought child #2. She's out of frame. I'll probably start locking them in the basement when they are teenagers.

And my wife's the star of my movie, that's for sure.

We're too poor to afford any form of vacation, so shucks to me. Still, I'm glad you had a good time, JB. Hopefully your kids will carry on the tradition, eh?

I live in Florida, so I'm spoiled when it comes to going to the beach. But when I was a kid, my parents would always take me to the beach. We'd stay at a little hotel and just spend quality family time together. They'd take me to Disney, too, sure, but even to this day, I still love staying at the beach for a weekend and just relaxing. I was just browsing through family photos today, and probably 50% of the pictures taken in my childhood were on the beach. I miss those days.

I'm glad you had fun, and it's good that you're taking your kids on trips like those. It's hard for me to say this, but there are more important things than Disney (though not too many things). =]

Disney is still one of my favorite places to go, even though I went there on my honeymoon and have EX memories of the place. When you're in Disney, you can't help but be happy. Everything is so cheerful and colorful and uplifting. The music, the air, the people. It's clean and welcoming and magical. My favorite thing is watching my daughter's face as she takes it all in.

The last time we went (she's been 4 times) I took her onto Space Mountain for our very first ride. She didn't know it was a rollercoaster (she had been too afraid to ride one) I fibbed and told her it was a train ride, somewhat like Its a Small World, whoops (hehe)--it's nothing like that. Of course I put her in the very front too, in order to get the full effect. She loved it and hated it at the same time. When we got off the ride she looked at me and said, "OK, it wasn't that bad but I think I'm going to throw up now."

Guess I couldn't turn her into a roller coaster lover afterall.
