Old Prefrace

This is an old preface I made for a story that didn't pan out the way I wanted.

Preface

Humans had finally found out how to travel between systems by using “warp tunnels”. Humanity found them accidentally in between the orbits of the planet Neptune and the planetoid Pluto. The OSES-1 or Outer System Exploration Ship was on its was to the Oort cloud. It was looking for more resources in the Oort Cloud to fuel humanities population explosion since the colonization of the Moon, Mars, Venus, and space habitats around all of these planets. The OSES ended up in a completely new solar system. Scientists aboard the ship were able to identify the system as OGLE-05-169L star system. The system had been known to have planets, some of them terrestrial. What the scientists on board weren't ready for was a habitable planet already with some indigenous life forms on it. The OSES retreated back to the Sol system when its launch probe detected no artificial emissions from the planet
This unexpected discovery happened in they year 2089. The discovery turned the entire planet of Earth upside down. Most saw opportunity in this. Scientists were amazed, some wanted to send more ships through. Physicists wanted to study the actual phenomena of a “warp point” and a “warp tunnel”. Finally the United Nations stepped in. The nations in it decided that this had to be understood. They started on construction on new ships, using the data from the OSES to get an idea on how to build these new ships to better withstand the stresses involved in warp point travel. They also developed weapons systems, for this was unexpected. No one had expected even a semi-earth like planet in the first system we would make it to. If the chances of this happening were so great, it was very possible to come across intelligent life. These intelligent life forms might not be friendly.
There were seven new ships built at the beginning. Among them were several different classes of ships. Two of the ships were escort ships, that were crewed by members navies from the different countries. These ships were out-fitted with the newest weapons that had been developed especially for space-ships. The personnel of these ships were highly trained on how to operate them. There was one ship for the study of the space-phenomena, and this focused more on the physics and astronomy aspect of the mission. There was also a modified general survey ship for remote study of the planets and the system. There were also two ground study ships and one ship of marines for protection from anything...hostile.
The ships went on the scouting expedition two years later. They made a relatively safe warp transit after the astronomical study ship examined it determined the conditions required for the transit. The ships made a safe journey to the planet. Once there, the ships stayed in orbit for almost exactly one standard earth month. They spent this time studying the planet through satellites. They found the atmosphere to be breathable. Though the planet was slightly larger than earth, so its gravity was greater. They sent a smaller craft that was attached to one of the ships back through the warp point to the message relay station with the data gathered so far, as well as to request permission to land on the planet's surface.
One week later the ships had sent down their landing parties. The scientists and marines landed to find an almost eerily earth-like planet. The scientists went about studying the planet. They found that the planet's microorganisms weren't at all bothered by the earth microorganisms. After studying the planet for another two months the fleet headed back to Earth with all its findings.
The United Nations decided to allow private companies to build their own ships and to grab land on this new planet to sell for colonization. The second great space race had begun. Space travel had become commercial by now. The private companies almost tripped over themselves to get at this golden opportunity. The monetary possibilities were endless for them.
Ten years later there were cities on the planet which had by then been named Cardilan III, since it was the third planet in the now-named Cardilan system. Some fifty years later the hunt for more warp points was on.
More warp points were found. Ships were sent out to look for more habitable planets. Humanity's population had grown almost eight times what it had been, bringing the human population to close to 110 billion people. Overcrowding had become an issue. The main government was on Earth. The United Nations had ended up as a sort of world government, with all the individual countries acting more as districts or providences, than actual countries.
It was at this time that three more habitable planets were discovered. They were found in the systems of Gliese 876 and 55 Cnc, a binary system. The system 55 Cnc had two habitable planets, both of which had tropical climates all around the globe, this was due to the binary parent stars. The planet in Gliese 876 was a rocky world with temperate forests of strange dark green trees in the temperate zones of the planet. There were ice caps at the poles. The system of 55 Cnc was renamed Argus and Gliese 876 changed to simply Gliese.
The planets were simultaneously colonized, though there was not nearly a thorough enough survey of the planets. Gliese II was a barely hospitable world and it became what could be considered a third-world planet. But it is in-grained in human nature to overcome and conquer any environment. There were some patches of hospitable land on Gliese. People still bought the land that was put up for sale, mainly because it was cheap on most of the planet, the lush areas were fairly pricey. Gliese became a place where the poor could afford to go. In the north where the climate was fairly nice for most of the year some middle and upper class people moved to. There came a point where the class distinctions were very distinct, and without much in between them. Two providences were formed. With the upper class compromising the the northern western area. This was the providence of Arlaen. The third world portion was a larger area in the south, curling up north on the single continent to cover much of the east coast. This providence was called Trasalah.
The providence of Trasalah started becoming degenerate with a poorly equipped government. This was the time when the organization known as the Crimson Tide appeared. They took over the government with military force. Arlaen tried to fight back, but the Crimson Tide had garnered too much support from the people, their army had grown to large. This is when, possibly the most horrible time of humanity began. The Arlaen government tried to send the Military ship stationed there back to Earth to ask for aid.
As the T.N.S Ontario approached the warp point eight ships appeared in the space in front of it blocking its path. These ships looked nothing like Terran ships, for they were not Terran. Without so much as even trying to communicate the ships began firing upon the Ontario. The Ontario managed to fend them off for a short while, but was not able to get by. As the Ontario realized that they could not get by, it launched all of it's auxiliary craft as the Ontario itself overhauled its engines in a rush at the largest ship, which was sitting on top the warp point itself. Only two auxiliary ships out of twenty-seven made it through the warp point. The Ontario rammed the main alien ship. The explosion was massive as the energy coils of the two ships were set off like giant bombs by the explosives carried by both sides. When the two small craft that survived turned to make sure nothing followed they found no warp point. They were surrounded by other Terran Navy ships. The aliens had blow through the heavily populated Cardilan system, and the mothballed military ships had activated and fought invading hostile ships as well as located their emergence warp point. The Terran fleet destroyed many alien ships, though the aliens gave as good as they got. The alien fleet was trying to find a place they could turn and make a stand when they found the other warp point. The explosion though had done something to the warp point, though no one knew what. Whatever the case, the warp point was gone, and the Gliese system was left to deal with its own problems. That was in the year of 2154.

This preface is REALLY long. It is also far too detailed. A preface should (if you're going to use one at all) consist of major points of necessary information to get the reader up to speed in order to start the actual story.
