Little Words-340 words

I DON'T KNOW WHY THESE LITTLE STORIES HAVE BEEN POPING UP IN MY HEAD, BUT HERE IS ANOTHER ONE. THANKS FOR READING!

The glasses on the small round table begin to tremble. The silverware shakes atop the white linen napkins. It is coming like a train.

“This isn’t working Peter.” I grab the knife to keep it from flying off the table. The earthquake stops. “Peter? Peter, are you listening to me?”

I look up at her and am amazed she was untouched by the quake. Her hair is swept back perfectly in those little oriental sticks women like to wear. Her makeup is too heavy for such a hot June day.

“I am leaving you.” Her lips covered in her favorite lipstick, Devil’s Secret, over-exaggerate the words. “Do you have anything to say?”

“You said you loved me.”

“Don’t pull that shit Peter. I really don’t need it right now.” She signals to the waitress for the check.

I could grab her hand, jerk it across the table and demand an explanation. But, it won’t matter. She won’t stay.

“Where are you going to go?” I ask as the waitress hands her a slip of paper. Her eyebrows furrow in irritation and she says she ordered a side salad not the cob salad.

“To Detroit. I have a friend that lives there.” She takes out her wallet and withdraws her debit card. I know I should offer to pay, but it is a joint checking account.

“A guy friend or a girl friend?”

“I don’t see how that is any of your business. But, yes, it is a guy friend.”

“A boyfriend?”

“No. I don’t every want to be tied down again. No more boyfriends.” The waitress brings the card and a slip back. She writes in a tip of $3.00, only 10%, and stands up with her purse hanging from her shoulder.

“Goodbye Peter.”

“Goodbye” It is such a little word. It doesn’t sum up what I’m feeling. She walks across the street, screaming at a taxi driver. I could run after her. I could follow her to Detroit. She still wouldn’t stay. My little words aren’t enough for her.

lol. It has nothing to him. Every single one of these little stories has been inspired by songs I listen to, so he has nothing to worry about. This one?

Not for all my little words by Magnetic Fields.

Ahh, music. I should have known.

It has some minor spelling and grammer errors, nothing the spell-check won't catch.

I love this. I especially loved the metaphor of the earthquake. Good stuff.

Just one question. Was the earthquake large enough to effect business at the restaurant?

Like I said before: simple words, emotional wrecking balls.

Wow! I saw them live in Boston a couple of years ago! That's so cool that you like that song enough to write a story around it. Stephin Merritt would be so proud!
