Scavengers

Sheer stupidity. That was the reason why the human race lost its status as hunters, and instead became a part of the hunted. Hubs, large cities encased in domes designed to provide an atmosphere similar to that of the one on planet Earth, were supposed to be the expansion of our world. A way for our race to prove to itself that it was indeed the ‘best of the best’, and that no other race came close. Instead, those ‘hubs’ were more like colossal cages, ensnaring us humans in traps of our own making as creatures that were smarter, faster, and even more monstrous than we could ever imagine, came along to wipe us out. The discovery of the universe Veaural was supposed to be the pinnacle of our success, but instead it became the key to our downfall. When numerous scientists and experts established the first hub colonies, after ‘extensive research’, the planets in the newly discovered system were deemed safe, with only a few minor creatures posing a minimal threat. Little did we know that the creatures we would come to fear lurked in hidden caverns and crevices as they watched and waited, sizing up our race as it would its prey.
As the human race was hunted down, it, like any species threatened by another genus stronger than itself, adapted. Some, like the Shiro Okami guards in Bukia Central, built weapons and patrolled the cities; many used their cunning and intelligence to survive. Others, however, used their skill and smarts in another, more morally corrupt, way. They became scavengers…
Scavengers, the scum of the universe, idolized by criminals and legends among travelers, roamed the new solar system for anything and everything they could sell for money. They literally scavenged amid the nearest planet, taking anything of value before moving on and pillaging the next one.

“Scav Ships have been spotted nearby!”
“Scavengers?” was the skeptic reply.
“Yes, spotted only miles from here,” urged the first voice.
“Impossible! They aren’t real, just the result of overactive imaginations.”
“Those gutless, brainless, wastes of human matter are real,” the first voice insisted. “And I’ve heard they plan to pass through this very hub …”

The news spread like wildfire through the streets of Hub BL4922, starting out as discreet whispers of concern and exploding into full-blown panic by midday.

Something random I had forgotten I had written. Comments are appreciated, thanks.
