March 19

Hey guys. This is a short story I put together. Definitely looking for some feedback, be it positive or negative. Looking forward to your responses.

March 19

The light hurt his eyes as he opened them. Everything was unnaturally white. The sheets on the mattress he was on, the four walls that surrounded him, even his clothes. Where am I? He asked the question but didn't know the answer. He got out of the bed and walked out the door into a long hallway. Here too everything was white, void of all color. There were many doors along the hallway and decided to check in the room for anyone that might be there.

As he opened the first door, a gust of cold air, that chilled him to the bone rushed out of the room. He saw no one in the room, so he moved on to the next. The same thing happened. He went from room to room and it was exactly the same. He finally came to the last room at the end of the hall. As he opened the door, he saw a dark figure in the corner. The figure had no shape. He was just a dark shadow in the white room. The figure stared at him with cold dead eyes, but didn't move. The man was scared but he didn't know why. Chills ran up and down his spine as he stared back at this black amorphous being.

In the corner of his eye the man saw another figure and turned to look. There was nothing there. When he looked back in the room the figure was gone. As he turned from the door, he saw another door that wasn't there anymore. He opened it and saw that it led outside, and stepped through it. That's when he heard the voice. Sir. He looked around and saw no one. As a matter of fact he saw absolutely no one. There wasn't a person in sight. All he saw were empty cars and buildings, but no people. He walked around and found a newsstand. He picked up a newspaper but all it had on it was the date. March 19, 2003. He picked up another newspaper and it had the same thing on it. He dropped the papers and started walking. Now he was getting worried. Then he saw the soldier. He was in full combat gear and he looked... terrified.

He was looking right him and he was frozen in place. The man yelled. "Hey! Who are you" The soldier ignored him. He realized the soldier wasn't looking at him, but past him. He turned around and saw the black figure again. It started moving towards him, he wanted to run but he couldn't. The figure stopped and hissed at him and then said, "You did this". The figure then rushed past him and went straight for the soldier. The soldier started screaming, "Sir! Sir!", as the darkness rushed towards him. "Sir!"

"Sir, are you ok?", his advisor asked him. "Where am I?" the man asked. "You're in the conference room sir". The man looked around and saw men and women in suits hovering over him with concerned looks on their faces. "What happened?", he asked. "You just passed out, for a few seconds. How are you feeling?". "Fine I guess", the man answered, "help me up".
They helped him up. "Are you well enough to continue sir?" the advisor asked. "What's today's date?" he asked. "It's March 19th sir" the advisor responded seemingly confused. "Today's the day sir" he quickly added. The man looked at his advisor and then he remembered. Today was the day. "Oh yeah, that's right", he said. That's when he remembered what he just saw, and it all came into focus. He looked at his watch. The time read 6:25 p.m. "O.K. ladies and gentlemen let's get down to why we're here".

A mere five minutes later at 6:30 p.m. on March 19, 2003 the President signed the launch order that initiated Operation Iraqi Freedom.
