Shadow waited for Max to leave before he entered another code on the key pad and once more sealed up the books in their protective tomb. He followed Shadow to a platform on the other side on the room where Shadow took his place behind a large, black, desk. Shadow looked at Max and threaded his fingers as he was carefully choosing the words that he was about to say. Max sat down in a large padded seat nearby as he waited for what ever it was that Shadow was going to say. A few minutes passed as Shadow sat still behind the large desk looking past Max into space.

Finally Shadow stirred from behind the desk and opened a drawer to his side and pulled out a file and several papers as threw them onto the desk with a loud flop. A cloud of dust popped out from the papers and as it started to settle Shadow picked up the papers and made his way to the other side of the desk. He found his way to another seat adjacent of Max and sat down, eyes drilling into Max all the time.

“Well As you…”Shadow began to speak but stopped as he withdrew and searched for what he wanted to say. His gaze was intense and never left Max as he started to talk. “As you know I am a large collector of books, about the dark arts and the occult…” He hesitated “But there is more to me than that, not many people know much about me except for my writing, but what many people don’t realize about me is that what I write about isn’t a result of a great imagination, but of experience…” There was an air of uneasiness in his voice. “There is good reason for that, for if people knew too much of my past it would result in chaos and un-needed deaths. If you come under my employment you will be in danger if you know too much so under my employment you will be on a need to know basis.

“What is it that I will be looking for under your employment that will put me in a position of so much danger?” Max shifted in his seat.

“That is need to know information, and until you are under my employment you will not know…” Shadow’s gaze was hard and he never took it off of Max until he shifted in his seat. “So if you want to know a little more about this venture that I need you to go on I need to know that you are on board with me one hundred percent. Shadow lifted his white hand and waited for Max to reply. Max shifted forward in his seat and thought about what he was about to do, then he grasped the shriveled hand in front of him and shook it cautiously. A grim smile came over shadow as he nodded in approval.

Max got home around midnight, it was raining hard, so hard in fact that on couldn’t see more than one hundred feet in front of himself. The taxi that he took couldn’t get into the parking lot because he didn’t have the sensor for the gate so Max had to walk to his apartment building. Traversing the myriad of cars in the parking lot took longer than he expected and bye the time that he got to his building he was soaked all the way to the bottom layer of his clothing. He walked into the lobby and dripped for a few minutes before he felt warm enough to make it to the elevator so he could make it to his room.

All he wanted to do was to get in his room and get in the shower then go to bed. When he exited out of the elevator and turned to go down the hall to his room he noticed his door was open. He pulled out his leather man knife and made his way to the door. Creeping ever so slowly he reached the door of his room and braced himself for whatever might be waiting on the other side.

The rain beat down hard on the porch, The apartment seemed in order nothing out of place. Making his way slowly into the living room he looked down the hallway leading to the bathroom and his room… Max grabbed a sword off of the wall and continued down the hall. Step, step step, his footsteps matched his heartbeat. Step, step, step… Bathroom, empty, nothing except soap and toilet paper…

Crash! Max spun around to try and find the source of the noise, then some movement caught his eye. Someone was in his room, looking for something. Thump, thump, thump, his heart was going crazy with anticipation and fear of what was going to happen next. He felt the cold of the knob in his hand as he slowly twisted, he could hear all the springs and gears popping and turning as he slowly pushed the door open. The intruders back was to him; thump, thump, thump, his heart was beating so hard he was sure the intruder could hear it, he raised the sword and…

“There is something romantic about the rain don’t you think? It is almost sensual when you think about it; raining down from heaven Is the gift of life, the element that everything on this planet thrives on and needs to live. Think about it, there are animals that are waking up from a slumber with in the earth and the first thing they doo is drink the water that awoke them in the first place, simply amazing.”

“Now, unless you are going to show me a trick with that pig sticker there or give me a haircut with it I suggest that you put it away before I put it away for you…” Without turning the man lifted up his jacket and exposed two pistols strapped to his sides and a sizeable knife hanging from his belt. The man now turned to face the sword tip that was no more than two inches away from his face. He focused on the blade and then looked at Max until he was uneasy and put the sword down.

“To the business at hand, I understand that you accepted the offer that Shadow offerd you, yes?” The man circled the desk positioned in the corner of Max’s bedroom and sat in the chair, never taking his eyes off max. Max plopped on the bed adjacent of the man…

“Who are you and how did you get into my apartment?” Max tried to sound like he was not frightened by the man.
