The man made his way to the podium up on the stage where it was a few minutes before he even said anything to the audience. Everyone was in their seats awaiting the speech by the generous host of the party that they were happy to attend. They all waited with anticipation to figure out what he was going to say. Mr. Shadow was taking his sweet time behind the podium finding his notes and getting ready to speak. He got a sip of water out of a glass that was concealed under the podium and dug around in his pockets for his note cards. He finally got his small rectangle reading glasses out of a pocket somewhere in the long black robe that he had draped around him and he cleared his throat as he got ready for his speech.

“Ladies and gentlemen….” His voice was deep but it sounded scratchy, as if he had been smoking all his life and his vocal cords were damaged.

“…it is good to see all of you here at my home and I hope you are enjoying yourselves….” He continued to talk about his new book and his plans for the future. He thanked all his friends and the people who made it possible to make this possible for him to make him go so far. He also acknowledged the new faces in the audience that he had never seen before or were old friends that he was welcoming back. After he went through all his cards and had nothing to say he bowed to the audience and signaled the orchestra to begin to play and then he meandered off the stage to make conversation with his audience. All his success had not made him callus to his fans and always found a way to spend some time with the fans and friends at events.

Max spent the night walking around rubbing elbows with the, “elite”, hoping to make some new connections and employers. All through the night he had not met the host of the gala, thought he wanted to. Occasionally he caught the writer hobnobbing with his friends, Max didn’t know what he would say to the man if he had the opportunity to talk to him, the fact that he almost got sick with excitement when he made eye contact with didn’t say much for what would happen in a conversation. Thinking that he would not get the chance to even meet the elusive host with all the people to see him, Max decided not to worry himself about it and go about the party. Max in any public situation was like a shadow, he was able to slip into any event and get out without being noticed. Max was not a social being, unless he was approached or there was the possibility of a gaining a new client in it. Max used his ability to slip into a crowd with being noticed and infiltrated small conversations and put his two cents in when ever he can.

At one point there was a conversation that he had gotten involved in where he was holding his own against two religious writers. When Mr. Shadow came in and effectively ended the debate and left everyone without a thing to say. Max sauntered off trying to catch up to Mr. Shadow to try and have a word with him.

“Max…I don’t believe that I have ever had the pleasure to have a conversation with you.” Shadow Crept down the hallway and signaled for Max to follow him.

“You are right, we never have had the privilege.” Max had trouble keeping up with the lanky old man. “It is an honor to finally get to meet you I have wanted to meet you for a while.” He tried to look at Shadow but he was still to far in front of Max to make eye contact with.

“It is strange that we haven’t met before, your name is a byword amongst collectors such as myself.” Shadow stopped before a private elevator and from his belt produced keys that he fidgeted with until he found the one he wanted. He put the key into the slot and the doors opened. “I believe that I may have use for your services here in the near future my dear boy…” Shadow signaled for Max to follow him as he stepped into the elevator. The doors closed and they ascended up the floors.

“What did you have in mind?” max fidgeted with excitement with the thought of working for a man he so looked up to. “As you may have heard, my services don’t come cheap.” The elevator came to a stop and the doors slid open to a penthouse that Max may have never seen if he hadn’t been so lucky. “What is this place?” Max has never seen so many books in one place, at least not so many rare editions.”

“My friend you are a lucky man, there are not many people alive who can Say that they have set foot in this room.” He stepped out onto a black marble floor that stretched to either side of the room and ran into the walls that were covered with ornate ornaments from years of traveling. In the middle of the room was a glass vault with enough books in it took keep Max occupied for many years to come. Max made his way around the glass chamber, there was just enough room between the vault and the walls for two people to fit through comfortably. The glass chamber stretched till it almost made contact with the ceiling. Max found himself in front of the door wanting to walk through the forest of books that lay ahead of him. “May I?” Max asked, not taking his gaze off the books in front of him.

“But of course…” Shadow made his way over to the door and entered a code on a key pad on the side of the door. With a gush of cool air the doors opened in front of Max. Tentatively he made his way inside the room. He savored the time he had with the ancient texts that surrounded him. At his best guess Max figured that the oldest books in the collection were at least a few hundred years old… A grim smile spread over his face as he thought of how much the collection around him were worth. Shadow was talking but Max couldn’t hear him in the chamber until he stepped in with a smile and approached Max.

“Exquisite aren’t they, their dull sheen and the smell of the leather and binding, not to mention the knowledge that is held with in their pages from ages now past and turned to dust.” Shadow lightly caressed a book in his snow white hands bound in leather with a symbol, Max didn’t recognize, embossed on the cover. “Now my boy as much as I would love to sit here and examine all that lies in my collection with you I do have business to discuss with you.” Shadow replaced his book and silently made his way through the rows and out of the chamber with Max following behind.
