Talking (Only 686 Words!)

Rob turned at the sound of Jen’s shoes clacking on the floor. She smiled at him but Rob could tell that it wasn’t a real smile. That was something he could always tell. Rob thought about the way Jen had been acting that week and hoped that she wasn’t planning on ending their relationship, especially now that he had the ring. When Jen finally arrived, he leaned down and gave her a quick kiss, smiling.

Jen smiled slightly. "Look Rob, we need to talk. You’ve been acting weird all week and I want to know what’s wrong. Besides, there is something I have to tell you." Jen paused. "Are you going to break up with me?" There, she had said it. It was out in the open now.

Rob stared at her. "What? Of course not! I would never do that! Aren’t you going to break up with me?"

Jen’s mouth fell open. "Of course not! Why would you even think that?"

Rob looked past her. "Well, you’ve been acting so weird lately and I thought maybe you didn’t want to be with me or something. But why would you think I was going to break up with you?"

"The same reason you thought I was going to break up with you! But I’m glad you’re not and we still need to talk." Jen answered.

Rob nodded. "Ok, but lets go someplace else. Want to go back to my apartment and talk?"

Jen nodded. She always felt so comfortable in Rob’s apartment, though that was probably because Rob was there and she spent more there than she did at her own house.

About twenty minutes later, they arrived at Rob’s apartment. After fixing some hot chocolate, they sat down on the couch together. Jen rested her head on Rob’s shoulder and sighed. Well, he wasn’t going to break up with her but she didn’t want anything to happen because of what she had to tell him.

"Rob, I need to tell you something." Jen said, sitting up. Rob looked at Jen intently, wondering what this was all about. Jen sighed, she had to do it now. "I’m pregnant." There. It was out in the open now and she couldn’t take it back. Looking at the floor, she waited for Rob to yell or at least do SOMETHING. When he finally did something, it definitely wasn’t what Jen had expected.

Rob was shocked but the news but happy all the same. For a moment, all he could do was stare at Jen but when it finally set in, he hugged Jen harder than he ever had. "We’re gonna have a baby!" Rob shouted but the he froze. Jen had never said the baby was his but she hadn’t done it with anyone else, had she? "Wait, who is the father?"

Jen looked up. "You of course! I don’t have sex with every man I meet, you know!" Jen laughed and Rob smiled. "We’re going to be parents, Rob!" Jen’s smiled suddenly turned to a frown. "I don’t know if I’m ready to be a mom. What if something happens between us and the baby grows up without a dad or living in two houses? I don’t want that to happen!" The cheerful Jen suddenly became close to tears.

"Ssh. That’s not going to happen! I promise that I will never, ever, leave you or the baby if I have a choice. I swear. This baby is going to grow up with a wonderful mom in a wonderful life. Ok?"

Jen nodded at her boyfriend. "Ok but what were you going to tell me?"

Rob looked around, then picked Jen up and sat her backing down. Getting on one knee, he looked at Jen. "Jen, I love you so much. I promise to always be there for you and never leave. Will you marry me?" Rob asked, with tears in his eyes, pulling a ring from his back pocket.

Jen stared for a moment. "YES!!" She screamed, jumping up, and crying happily. Rob smiled and slipped the diamond ring on her finger. Maybe they would live happily ever after.
