Plan B ending
This was a rejected twist ending for a romance. But I kept it just in case...
Eric settled onto the couch to relax. A cup of tea sat within reach. His soon to be stepdaughter was exchanging a pleasant banter with him. Sharon stood at the door looking displeased.
“Pack and get out, and do it now.”
“Mother, he just got here, what’s wrong?”
“I want him gone, now, just consider it revenge.”
Eric was stunned, he sat mouth open, speechless.
“Mother, you brought him halfway across the country, he walked out on his family and business because you told him you still loved him. What is the matter with you?”
“Tough, now get out!”
Eric stood up slowly, he was almost crying.
“I’ll die before I go back.”
“Fine, just don’t make a mess.”
Eric’s eyes glazed. He stood up and walked unsteadily to the kitchen. He found the knife rack and pulled a steak knife out. He held it in front of him, examined it for a moment and put it down. In a single motion, he ripped his shirt off. Grabbing the knife, he staggered towards the patio door. Steffi’s screams were muffled noises to him. Sharon followed him to the deck. Eric stumbled down the few steps to the lawn.
He turned and screamed at Sharon. “Will this do?”
She leaned on the door arms crossed silent, clearly enjoying the spectacle.
Eric saw Steffi shove past her mother into the house. Sharon never lost her gaze on Eric.
“I love you, I really love you, Why?”
Sharon responded with a single gesture of one upraised finger.
Eric placed the knife to his chest above his heart. He was crying. It took both hands to pierce the skin. It descended into him quickly. He knew the heart would tear open and the blood fill his chest in seconds. His suffering was over. The last sounds he heard were Steffi’s screams and sirens. His hands dropped free of the weapon. His stare locked on Sharon and he slowly sunk to the lawn. Steffi tried to hold him as he tumbled forward. Eric crumpled to his knees supported by the screaming girl. He twisted slightly and his weight came down on top of her. She cradled his lifeless body on her lap. She was sobbing uncontrollably embracing the poor victim of her mother’s cruelty. Slowly she removed the knife. Eric’s broken heart was silent, now ripped open. The still heart left little trace of its life long work. The knife was almost clean; a tiny trickle of blood ran down his chest. Her tears diluted it into a red smear.
Steffi flung the knife to the porch. It landed at Sharon’s feet. Slowly and calmly, she picked it up holding the handle tight in her hand and then placed it on the deck railing.
The yard was filling with the red and blue flashes from the emergency vehicles converging on the scene. Police and paramedics soon followed arriving from all directions. One approached Steffi. She refused to release Eric. She turned and looked at her mother.
“She killed him, she killed him.”
She held Eric closer and resumed her sobbing.
A police officer approached Sharon. She handed him the knife. Steffi looked up at the sound of handcuffs closing. Her mother showed no emotion as she they led her down the stairs and away.
Finally, She released Eric and stood up. She was oblivious to the noises and the voices trying to talk to her.
Only she and her mother knew it was suicide. A suicide driven by a suddenly malicious woman. Stephanie’s mother had always been so kind and loving. Sharon would not see her daughter again except at her trial. To avenge Eric, a man he had no time to understand and accept, she would lie to convict her mother.
No one deserved to die like that.
