Just an Idea... need some input

Main Ideas

I have this idea for… Something I don’t know. Perhaps a book but I don't know if I will take it that far. But any way it’s a sort of Science Fiction piece, but in the same way 1984 is a science fiction book. It takes place in a semi-dystopian future. 2040 or so. Scientist have created a steroid targeted to enhance the the intellectual and creative aspects of the brain. And we fallow an artist a slight recluse living in a slum in futuristic New York City. And we fallow a group, namely the leader, of scientist creating the technology. I have mapped out a basic story line. And I was just wondering what I should change, or take out or if I should even pursue this story.

Basic Plot

-Develop a steroid to enhancing the intellectual and creative processing of the brain.

-Protagonist is an artist, poor, living unhappy in the slums of our dystopian future. We will call him Dustin.

-Scientist Dr. Keys applies his technology first to apes. And in time these apes become artistic. The paint a portrait of one of Dr. Keys

-Dustin paints his own picture of a woman watering her garden. He sees this through the grimy window of his apartment, but refuses to paint the window in.

-The scientists apply the serum to a human, Rachael.

-Dustin learns about this and is outraged, knowing Rachael and always seeing her as an unintelligent dits, and icon of all he resents .

-The Test Apes die due to brain hemorrhaging to the brain

-The product becomes mass produced

-Six months pass

-Dustin, now scruffy and emaciated has isolated himself from society. He has not painted in months. He has done nothing and he is begging to go schizophrenic. He hears one of the apes in his house and he tries to locate it.

-All over the world people are beginning to die in similar ways as the apes.

-Dr. Keys is ashamed that he never released the results of the ape testing and is over whelmed with guilt.

-America is scarcely populated. Very few have not had the shot and are very hard to locate. Dustin is among these people and so is Dr. Keys, having not taken the shot knowing the affects it might have on him.

-Dustin leaves his house, trying to run from the apes and finds Dr. Keys.

-Dustin and Dr. Keys have breakfast in an abandoned Denny’s. Dustin learns that Dr. Keys created the technology that turned all the unintelligent wankers in the world into pshycological superiors to Dustin. Dustin explains his rage, his feeling of worthlessness because Dr. Keys took the only thing he ever had. Creativity.

-Dustin stabs Dr. Keys to death

-Dustin locates a museum and has a look inside. The work is all new, taking on an entire new style that he can hardly comprehend. It is amazing and he is shamed that he recognizes the beauty. But he realizes it is all fabricated creativity and leaves in anger.

-After leaving the and museum through a back exit, Dustin finds a Pablo Picassos painting by a bag of garbage, Dustin realizes that all art has been, synthetically produced, replacing genuine creativity. Even his own. He shoots himself in the head.

Themes

I would go into detail about not only the "fabricated creativity" today. But many other things.

By "fabricated Creativity" or "Intellectualism", I mean the phonies. The copy after copy of genuine creativity, and people ignorantly take these copies as improvements of the original when really they are just bollocks.

I would also talk about the destruction of creative thought through scientific discovery. And in an even more basic level, that while scientific researchers believes they are "bettering" human kind, they are really destroying it (They believe they are bettering creativity and making art better but really they are just destroying human brains).

(sorry if the "themes" section was uneeded)

Well, thanks for reading. I would realy love to hear what you have to say.

Thank you

Not sure if I'm the write person to reply to this pos, but what the hell.

The beginning sounds very similar to the plot of The Lawnmower Man (the film, not the book). In this film, a mentally challenged gardener is given a brain enhancing treatment and becomes more intelligent. The story then takes a wierd twist and Jobe, the gardener, then becomes 'one with the computer' and enters a cyber world. However, the start is similar to your idea.

I'm not saying that is a bad thing. I llike the idea.

From there, your idea breaks away from The Lawnmower Man.

I would very much like to see how this story develops. Although this bit:

seems a little off. Maybe that's just because you end the story with a suicide. I'd be very interested to see how you portray this scene.

Good luck with the story though.

Thanks for your imput. I have seen Lawnmower Man actually. I completly missed the connection when writing this idea, but you are totaly right. Perhaps it was subconsciously feuled in part by that movie. I guess what I was really thinking was: This would be the artist, writers nightmare. A nightmare for all those people whos greatest strength is their creativity. I mean, if I lost my creativity I would lock myself up just like Dustin.
