A lame moment of myself - To the shout of war

A very lame piece of me to write, dunno why I posted it anyway. Bash it if you want.

To the shout of war

The attack had begun, our superiors told us to leave, being military cadets there was nothing we could do, but we stayed- me and my companions-, we’d stay, we’d protect the castle.

To the shout of war
Prepare the steel and the steed
And the earth will shake to its core
At the sound of the cannon’s roar

It was a cold morning, one of those crisps dawns were you could smell the aroma of the trees like air. Yesterday had been a terrifying day, the enemy army had attacked us, starting fire directly at the castle; we answered and managed to hold them off but they retreated, it was obvious they would attack today again. General Nicolas had insisted that we left but we refused, there were only 1600 soldiers, as prepared as they could be they wouldn’t be able to hold for long without us, even if we were just 200 cadets, it evened the odds, albeit slightly.

I was nervous; my post was at the tower, close to the flag. As if sensing my nervousness, they flag shifted slightly at the mercy of the wind, a gentle gesture, I wasn’t alone. Then they came, a small flock of bird flew away in fright, indicating the approach of the enemy, standing I gave a shout of alarm and the castle became alive, cannons were moved into place, guns were loaded and soldiers to their posts. I too loaded my gun and prepared, the flag still flapping slightly.

The battle started, bullets flew past and cannon balls were exchanged with roaring sounds. I abandoned my post for closer range, positioning next to another cadet that shared my name. In a moment when we both had to reload we looked at each other, I don’t know what expression I had in m face but he smile, an encouraging smile, he was sure that we would win and tried to tell me without words, I understood and I wanted to believe it too but, there was so much against us.

Though were erased from my mind as we began to shoot the enemy once more, but this time there weren’t falling back, quite the contrary. Before we knew we were fighting head to head with them, the enemy had climbed the castle walls and invaded, we were lost. My friend, the one who smiled at me, had been shot in the head, along with many others, mostly young cadets. We had lost.

And then I looked; the flag! It still hadn’t been taken down! It was still there flapping gently against the wind in the same manner it had soothed me before. The way to it was open, I threw the soldier that was against me and made a run for it, halfway through a shot hit me in the right shoulder, I feel to my knees with a gasp, but this was no time to give up so I stood and ran to the flag. Once I reached it I turned and looked at the massacre, most of the soldiers were dead and those who were alive were being killed, we had lost, but the flag was still there. The enemy approached me with the intention of setting their flag, but I couldn’t allow it. Tearing the flag from the ‘stick’ I wrapped it around myself and jumped.

Of course I knew I was jumping to my death, but I was also jumping for freedom. The enemy had not taken down the flag by force, thus they could not take down our strength, our will to live, to fight. And perhaps one day, one day, we’d truly be free.

Mother country! You children will swear
To exhale their last breathe on your altar
If the bugler with its warlike accent
Summons them to fight with courage
For you the olive garlands!
A memory of glory for them!
A laurel for you of victory!
And for them a tomb of honor!
