Okay I'm thinking of dropping this plot because it just seems (to me, anyway) to be too absurd to actually work. Tell me what you think.

The Vietnam War was one of few wars that United States has turned unvictorious in. The fact of it is that we hadn't lost a war with Vietnam, but lost a war with our own flesh and .
The current president had sent us out with the intentions of preventing the fall of the South Vietnamese government. The United States failed to achieve its goal, but the cause was because three men had other plans in mind.
Denmark Hansen, a leading mind in the United States military had developed plans for a weapon so devastatingly powerful that it could not only win the war, but assure the United States become and remain the world's most powerful country. In return, Denmark demanded to be the new leader of the country, complete power over the military and the of the former president. Denmark never elaborated on what he planned to do with the country, and as a result, was deemed an enemy against the peace and was banished from the country. He managed to keep a hold of his plans, code-named 'Arcanum'.
Generals Bryan Devereaux and Harkov Selment of the United States military heard rumor of Denmark Hansen hiding his plans for Arcanum in Southern Vietnam and was planning to sell them to North Vietnam. General Devereaux new of the severe danger that would come if anyone were to ever get those plans, and the only way to protect it would to be to take control of them himself. General Selment had different plans in mind and immediately cut off all communications back to the Pentagon, leaving the mlitary completely independent in a foreign area.
General Devereaux soon gained knowledge of Selmen't plans and the military was divided into three:
The Arrogant; General Deveareaux and his army, those who thought they could win against both North Korea and their own
The Heretics; General Selment's army and those who betrayed the United States to gain control over the plans for the weapon for their own use
The Ignorant; General Alexi Anderson and his army. Those who remained loyal the United States and were fighting North Vietnam as instructed by the president.
With the military divided into three different groups, and two thirds fighting against each other, the United States didn't have a fighting chance to win North Korea and therefore were forced to withdraw. General Selment managed to assassinate Denmark with a professional sniper named Norman Reynolds and claimed Arcanum. At the same time, General Devereaux had planned an ambush on Selment's army, but it backfired as General Anderson's army mistook Deveaux's for the Vietcongs and opened fire. Only the leaders of the armies and a few soldiers remained alive in the crossfire, at which time they called a ceasefire. Selment broke the truce and caught the other two generals in a time of vulnerability and both were forced to join with him.
After the war, there were more unaccounted s than anticipated, and no one in D.C. could explain the surplus s. Questions began arising and the government couldn't explain it. Only the three generals who knew what happened had answers. They offered to stop the rioting if the president were willing to give up his presidential position. He remained in office, but transfered all the powers and responsibilities of all the heads of government, the military and an additional fifty-thousand people to help control, but all were sworn under oath to never reveal that the president was no longer in control.
Over time, the facade of The Big Three, the name that the generals chose for themselves became the truth, and once again, the country was in peace. No more questions were arising as the people were assured the country was being run as it should. The Big Three were in hiding; no one knew their location, and with all the funding and personnel they could need, they began work on Denmark Hansen's plans for the 'MonKhmer Arcanum.'
