The Wait

Marie Shniper

The Wait

Rooke’s voice is heard from off stage.

Rooke: (her voice growing with sound as if she was coming closer) …and then he was like “wow, you did not just say that.” And I’m like, “I’m not you average girl, bud.”

Rai’s overly loud laughter is heard as Cicely, Rooke, Dylan, and her enter the stage. Sounds of a loud amusement park sounding are heard. Cicely is nodding and smiling but with an absent look on her face. She is a shy looking but subtly pretty girl in her late teens. She has light brown hair and hazel eyes. Her clothes are not of the latest style but not tacky. Dylan is staring at the floor with his hands in his pockets. He is a cute skinny boy that seems very shy. He has dirty blond hair that he keeps uncombed because he thinks it looks more interesting that way. His clothes are the popular style for boys. Baggy but not dirty. Rai is laughing wildly and agreeing with everything that Rooke says. Rai is short and brunette. She has lovely dark brown eyes but a vacant stare. She always has a dreamy look on her face as if she was somewhere else. She is wearing a shit with a glittery butterfly on it and blue jeans. Rooke is a vivid red-head with a pleasant face but isn’t very attractive because of her personality. Her clothes are perky and stylish. She is dressed very sophisticated.

Rooke: (smiling with contempt) He wasn’t even happy that I had handed in the assignment. He just thought that I was this horrible person for handing in the homework late in his class.
Cecily: (with a false smile) Yah, that’s a good story. (Her smile fades and in desperately polite facial expression and voice) What about that other story you said you would tell us. That one that you couldn’t tell around the consular.

Rooke: (glancing over at Cicely with annoyed expression) But I’m not finished yet.

Cicely: (aggravated) But we heard this story already on the bus here!

Dylan: (looking up with a mellow expression) (said in mild voice) Yah, Rooke. If you’re going to talk at least say something new.

Rooke playfully sticks her tongue out at Dylan.

Rooke: (suddenly very excited and slightly bouncing up and down) Oh my god! Look at that roller coaster! (whistle) It’s so cool!

Cicely: (Looking over at the line of people. Speaking as though to herself) Yah, but look at that line. It would take us an hour to just get on one ride.

Dylan: (genuinely agreeing with Cicely. Nods head) Yah. It’s a cool looking roller coaster but we got the rest of Six Flag at our disposal. (Looks over his shoulder) We could go over to that shop and make a left and go on some water rides…

Rooke interrupts him.

Rooke: (whining) But this one is so cool! Let’s to this one. (Turning rational) If we go on this one by the time we’re finished the rest of the park will be cleared up and we can go on a lot more rides. (pleading childishly and pouting) Pretty please, I really wanna. Dylan and Cicely glance at each other with annoyed looks.

Cicely: Rooke, we only have a few hours in this place and…

Rai interrupts Cicely.

Rai: (saying matter of factually) Hey, no wonder it looks so cool. This is Nitro! It the biggest roller coaster in the around.

Rooke squeals

Dylan: (shyly and blushing) Do…do you want to go on this one?

Rai: (shrugs) It’s famous. Right, Rooke?

Rooke: (smiling slyly for getting her way) Yeah, it sure is.

Dylan: (shrugging and still blushing) Then I guess it’s famous for a reason! Let’s check it out!

Dylan half runs over to the line followed by Rooke and Rai. Cecily lingers for a second, annoyed but silent. She walks over with a sense of purpose then stands in bored attention.

Rooke: (suddenly excited and speaking fast) Oh-my-god! Did I tell you guys what Mr. Rogers did the other day? I handed in this paper that I spent all weekend on. I swear, it was the work of a creative genius. It was really long and I talked about all this great stuff in it. You had to have seen it. Well, anyway, he handed them back the other day, and I got a D. Just because it was a week late! Can you believe it?

Rai: (with an expression of outrage) No way! That sucks!

Cicely rolls her eyes and Dylan ignores Rooke.

Rooke: (encouraged by Rai and ignoring Cicely and Dylan) I swear, if I had submitted it to a fine literature magazine I could have gotten top dollar for it. He should have gotten on his knees and thanked me for writing such beautiful writings. (Turning to Cicely) You know what I mean? He’s a real jerk.

Cicely looks scared at the prospect of being asked her opinion.

Cicely: (speaking careful and nervously) He’s not so bad. He did give you that three-day extension. You know, cause you missed those few days when you went to vista you aunt in Altoona. And he always gives us good grades on our tests. Well, except Jake and Steve but their jerks and they don’t count. (Cicely smiles at her joke then returns to being nervous)

Rooke: (looking at Cicely as though she is insane) You got to be kidding right? He’s the worst teacher in the world! All of his classes are so boring I fall asleep half the time. (Rooke flicks her hair). I’m doing so bad in that class. I swear he hates me.

Rai: (nodding) Yeah, I know.

Cicely: (bites her tongue) Yeah.

Dylan bursts out

Dylan: (to Rai) I like your shirt.

Rooke: (flattered and patting her own shirt) Oh, thanks. I got it last week. I just love the color…

Dylan interrupts

Dylan: Not you. Rai. I like your shirt. The sparkly stuff makes the butterfly look like it’s on fire. It’s cool.

Cicely: Yah. I like it to.

Rai: (happy) Thanks. I saw it in the store and I new that it would be great.

Rooke: (to Rai) You’re so lucky that you can buy and shirt you think looks good. (To the rest of the group) My parents keep me on the shortest leash. I can’t buy anything unless I have their permission. I have to try on everything to see if it fits and then my mum has to look at it for five minutes to see if it’s decent enough for her daughter. (Crinkles her nose) Like I would wear any of the slut wear most of the girls were at school. My parents don’t give me any credit. They think that since I’m popular with guys that I go out and date everyone. (Cicely and Dylan roll their eyes and share “whatever” looks) I’m a good kid and my parents don’t even care.

Rai: (agreeing) Yah, parents never notice the good stuff.

Dylan: (to Rai, teasing) Oh, what good stuff do you do?

Rai: (looking blankly at Dylan) Huh?

Dylan: (patiently explains) You said that parents never notice the good stuff and I asked you what good stuff do you do.

Rai: (still clueless) Oh, nothing. I mostly just watch TV or something.

Dylan: (still patient) What do you like to watch?

Rai: (shrugging) I like the OC

Dylan: (excited) Oh, I was going to watch that once cause I heard so much about it. So I turned it out it on and I’m watching it for a few minutes. Then my mum walks into the room right when someone on the show was grunting and moaning and she thinks something weird is up. So she walks behind me and this one advertisement has come one with this scratchy picture of this half naked women in on a bed and she thinks I watching something seriously indecent. She starts screaming her head off at me and tells me I’m grounded for the next five years. It took me ten minutes to calm her down and show her that I was just watching the OC. Since then I’m not allowed to watch that show.

Cicely laughs and Rai joins in. Rookie is getting annoyed at being ignored for so long.

As Rooke talks Cicely and Dylan lose interest and stare off into space. Rai keeps close attention to Rooke the entire time, nodding and “uh huh”-ing every now and then.

Rooke: (haughty) My parents let me watch whatever I want. They don’t care. I can watch rated R movies all the time. Sometimes they encourage it. Like when I was watching Saving Private Ryan, my mom came in and watched it with me. She didn’t even say anything. (Superior smile). My parents are great like that.

Cicely shrugged and stares out into the crowd. Cicely getting very annoyed and shifts her weight around, Tring to ignore Rooke. Dylan watches Rai. Rai turns and smiles at him and he blushes.

Rooke continues.

Rooke: (speaking as though she was speaking to a large crowd) I pity anyone who isn’t allowed do what the want to just because their parents won’t let them. People like that are sheltered and will end up behind everyone else. And it will be their parent’s fault.

Cicely rolls her eyes and looks to Dylan to share a whatever look with but he is watching Rai.

Rai: (nodding with a expression of full comprehension) Oh yah, I know. That would totally stink.

Dylan: (raises an eyebrow at Rooke) Oh really? Your parents let you watch whatever you want?

Rooke: (rolls her eyes and speaks as one would to a child) No Dylan. I can’t watch porn. Is that what you were hinting at. (Rants with constant hand flicks) You boys are all the same. Stupid perverted minds that can’t think about anything above the waste. If you could just focus on something other on what a girl looks like, you will find that girls are much more attractive. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Dylan interrupts

Dylan: (defensively) Hey, I’m not that bad. Some guys are but I really do care about what the girl is like.

Cicely: (chuckling and teasing) I don’t know Dylan. Boys have very shifty minds. Their constantly shifting from their heads to their waists. (She smiles to let Dylan know she kidding).

Dylan looks annoyed at first but smiles back and playfully punches her arm. Rai smiles at Dylan as well and he smiles back.

A group of people cross the stage. One person has a Buddhist symbol on their shirt. Rooke notices him and points him out to the group.

Rooke: Hey, check that dude out. He’s funny looking isn’t he? (Cicely, Rai, and Dylan look to where she’s pointing) What’s that symbol on his shirt? (Cicely looks interested) It look satanic. (Smiling) Hey maybe he’s a Satanist! (Cicely frowns and throws Rooke a dirty look that Rooke doesn’t notice) (Rooke turns to Rai) Careful, Rai, he might be looking for a human sacrifice.

Rai doesn’t know what Rooke is talking about and smiles and nods. Dylan frowns at Rooke. Cicely is very annoyed but tries to keep her voice even as she talks.

Cicely: (in a tight voice) It’s a Buddhist symbol. I recognize it from a book I once read about eastern religion. (Teasing Rai) And don’t worry, they’re not into human sacrifice. (Rai smiles back at Cicely)

Rai: Thanks, I can sleep safe now.

Dylan laughs to much at the joke. Rai turns to Dylan and give his a big smile. She is not used to having people laugh at her jokes and she is very happy that Dylan liked it. Cicely smiles at the two flirting with each other. Rooke begins to rant in order to get attention back to herself.

Rai:
