The fragment of plate, a shattered, sad thing, food still half on it, was crushed by John's boot as he strode towards Adam. The corner in which Adam was cowering did not offer much protection, and the boy trembled at John's approach. Adam didn't dare raise his head, but a hand under his chin did that for him, forcing him to crane his neck to meet John's gaze.

A gay abusive relationship? Or do you mean family members? If it's the former, I'd say that's pretty unheard of. Especially in books. Definitely give it a go.
