Should I? Shouldn't I?
A couple of weeks ago I had a rather odd dream that I thought might make a good little story.
Ahem ...
It involves this guy called Herald who's kinda a vampire, but not. As far as I could figure from my dream: he's the son of an actual vampire, was 'born' in hell from mortal and vampire blood mixing, has a soul of his very own and needed to grow into adulthood. He also lives off blood (goat mainly), and has the normal adversion to sunlight.
Herald is the second eldest of several hundred 'vampire' children and had been stationed in a fortress to guard a pass from invasion. He's called back to "daddy's" castle where he's given the task to care for a large crystal up in a tower. Locked in this crystal is an angel's soul. A woman who has no name, but is known as 'The mid-winter sunrise when the sun’s rays touch the snow-covered mountains and reflect the golden light' (>_>).
Herald falls for the trapped angel. This upsets "daddy", who decides to teach his son a lesson. He tricks Herald into going back to the fortress and then gives the angel a solid form. But angels can't live on earth after the sun goes down and the blood of their dying forms give a vampire (or his children) a semi-immortal quality for one night. Herald, learning of his father's plans, rushes back to the tower just in time to find the angel dying.
Since she's dying anyway, the angel tricks him into the drinking her blood. This turns Herald into a revenge-seeking madman, he kills all of his half-siblings before destroying his father. Having done that, he takes the angel's body outside where he cremates her. Dawn arrives not long after her body is ashes and Herald retreats into the shadows as a mid-winter sunrise bathes the spring-time land in a golden light.
Not being one who reads many vampire stories, I do know there are a fair few out there. So, while this made a pleasant (and also disturbing) dream, should I use my writing time to turn this into a story? Or has something like this been done so many times that it'll just fade into the background to merge with all the other stories? I certainly don't want to be accused of pinching someone else's ideas.

If you make it personal and original enough I think you can avoid plagarism. However, I dont think you have to make this a 'vampire story' to tell this proto-story/idea that you had a dream about. Try and think about a different scenario...I prefer reading about more realistic and human based stories and drama, but hey that just me. Anyway, try and think outside of the box, there are countless variations you can utilise to tell your story if you superimpose the themes and conflicts you want to explore onto a different scenario or genre...
With all that said, if you want to write about fantasy and all that, go for it, write what interests and inspires you.

I think you have some good ideas in there. Like alienatedalien says, if you make them original, you shouldnt have a problem. I say - go for it

Thanks AlienatedAlien (always reminds me of my other net name: Aldrea Alien) and Candrah.
I should've mentioned that I read and write fantasy, very little else interests me. When I do this, it'll be as written here: vampires and all. It'll be a challenge as there isn't much moving around and most of my stories involve the characters travelling for this and that reason.

Hey I like it. Be careful to avoid clashing ideas with the comic and film 'Blade' with your idea of half human, half vampire but the plot sounds interesting. Hope to read some of the story soon.
Oh and may I say you have some strange dreams

Thanks. Although I'm not sure when I'll be able to start on it. Got to finish another one first. But I'll be having a close look at this 'Blade' thing. Just to make sure I keep a definite line from other's ideas.
And yes, I do have rather odd dreams. Guess my brain likes to work overtime while I sleep. It sure keeps the ideas going, but this is one of the strangest dream I've had in a long time. The vividness alone freaked me just a little.

It sounds pretty good. I agree that you need to be sure that it is original, but it is a good concept. Good luck.
