Short Story - Stairs
As Joe stepped in his new house in Nuenberg, he felt a rush of the house’ macabre past. He can’t quite put his finger on it, but there was something unsettling about his new house.
“Mom, why should we move in here, I feel something bad as I get in here?“, Joe asked his mother. “Why? Is there anything wrong with this house? I don’t feel anything wrong sweetheart. Maybe it’s just your feeling moving in a new house, in a new town. But sweetheart, you will get accustomed to it later on”. Mrs. Green answered Joe while setting their bedroom. “Alright mom. Things would be nice if daddy didn’t need to move here.”
It was quite dark when they finished setting everything up and the Green family slept quite early that night.
“Joe, Joe, J…o…e…”, the spectral voices seemed to be calling Joe, almost as if to wake him up. “Who is it there?”, Joe ask uncannily. The sounds kept repeating without answering Joe. Joe got out of his bedroom and tried to search the source of the voice. The voice seemed to echo from every segment of that house. “Daddy, Mommy !”, Joe screamed in shake. But no matter how hard he tried to scream, his voice couldn’t come out. Everything seemed to be vacuumed that time. He ran to his parents’ bedroom, but he could never arrive at his parents’ bedroom. He kept running but the path seemed to be endless, he was just running in a certain path. There was light shining in the first floor and he walked ominously down the stairs. The stairs were endless. As he step down, he saw scenes which just like when he saw gory movies. Blood, corpses, weapons, headless bodies, filled the fear of Joe. In no choice, Joe kept walking down the stairs. At the tip of the stairs, there was a lady, who was in the scene.
“Help me Joe. I know only you can help me. It is a fate for you to move in here. I …”.
“Who are you? Was it you who called me?” Joe asked in tremble.
“I am Maria, the spirit in this house. I was murdered long before this house was sold and your father bought it. I am stucked in this house, never to be free.”
“WHAT? So you are not a human, aren’t you? What makes you think I could help you? I am just an ordinary boy, never involve in such a supernatural phenomena”
“I was a human. But he, that bastard, killed my family after he raped me. He was never caught because of the lack of proof. You are the only person who could see me. Only you could free our spirits from this house, from this stairs where we were assassinated. Our spirits remain in this stairs. And our bodies were buried in this stairs.”
“What am I supposed to do to help you free your spirits?”
“Destroy this stairs, his ring was fallen when he buried us here, bring it to the police as a proof. Only that would free our spirits from here.”
Joe told his parents and did precisely as what the lady told him the previous night. And by the next night, nothing happen anymore.
