Shoe-loops (part 1, 619w)

"Austin, Sheila, Taylor, Shawn, Sheila, Taylor, Austin, Taylor, Sheila, Shawn. Which way does it go? Who’s with who? Or more importantly, who’s supposed to be with who?" Said Hillary as she walked home from school, "They’re all in a big mess. Shawn’s going out with Taylor, but Taylor also likes Austin, and Austin likes Taylor, but Austin’s going out with Sheila, and Sheila likes Shawn, and Shawn likes Sheila, but Shawn’s going out with Taylor, and it just goes around and around."

"Hillary, just stop." I said as we all walked home, "I think Sheila’s cute but I love Taylor, that’s the bottom line."

"But Taylor likes Austin."

"Yeah, but she loves me. Just leave it be. It’ll all work itself out if we all just stop talking about it." I couldn’t stand this. Taylor and I had been going out for three years now. We were in love, and we knew it. But the fights hadn’t ended after the party. I walked in on her making out with Austin. Who knows what else had happened with them before that fateful night? That was three weeks ago. We had thought about breaking up, but after three years, couples seem to think that they can survive anything, we thought we could. We stayed together and worked it out together. But I couldn’t get it out of my mind. It was surly one hell of a shit situation.

When I got home, I slipped in a couple pieces of toast, and poured myself a glass of milk. My mom wasn’t home yet, wouldn’t be for another half hour, three-thirty. I had made plans to hang out with Nick. I left a note for my mom, telling her that I’d be home for dinner. I jumped into my shoes and tossed a sweater over myself. It was chilly outside, mostly because of the wind.

Nick and I played a couple video games, and watch a movie. Still, after the enjoyment of Guitar Hero, and the hilarity of Superbad, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Three years with Taylor and she did that. I couldn’t trust her anymore, especially around Austin.

I got on Nicks computer and logged onto MSN. Taylor was online. Her name made me regret what I was about to do. Taylor - If I could go back in time, I’d make you ONLY mine - ily Shawn. I opened a conversation window and hesitated after typing a single letter.

"Hey." I typed.

"Hey hunny." She replied.

"What’s up?"

"Nm n u?"

"Nuthin, just hangin with Nick."

"Icic."

That was it. That was all I could say. I sat there staring at the text box for ten minutes. I didn’t know how I could possibly say this. It’s harder than you’d think. I hit a few keys, but Nick’s computer lagged a little. I waited for it to unfreeze, and by the time it had, she had said it herself.

"I think we should take a break, c other ppl."

"What?" I said, as though I was completely surprised, and as though I wasn’t about to say the same thing myself. But I was, I did think we should see other people, I did think we needed a break, I just had no idea she was thinking the same thing.

"I guess you’re right." I said. And that was it. There was nothing else said. I exited out from the box and looked at her name. It had been twenty seconds, and she had already changed her name to Taylor - We had no other choice. And she had taken the ily Shawn out of her name.

So, I guess that was it, we were broken up, we were "Seeing other people."

The loop confounds me.

Geeze, I read it to the end. Good stuff even if its not my genre. Good pacing and good pull.

Not bad. You need some work on how to properly punctuate dialogue though. But you have an interesting hook. Your MC has a really strong voice and that's what kept me reading. Well done.
