Womb of Worlds

((Just a piece of prose to show off style, vocabulary, form, etcetera before getting to actual plotlines and stuff. This piece depicts the creation of a fantasy multiverse that serves as a setting for some works of mine, just for the hell of it.))

The Far Realms, they came to be called, once sentience reached an era upon which the written word was born. These realms, if they so could be called, were an amalgamation of all possibilities and all existences and realities, no matter how contradictory, impossible, or absurd. And so diverse was this amalgamation that one would never be able to find something familiar within their lifetime. This was the natural and true order of things, before light separated from darkness and time discovered the straight path of past and future.

Among these infinite existences, however, was a small, insignificant bubble of proto-reality with unlimited possible probabilities. It was a literal sea of potential, an existence as rare, inconceivable, and incomprehensible as everything else in the Far. And so it came to be that an entity in the Far Realms, with intelligence and sentience, however unlike any we could know, found this bubble, this sea, and became interested in it.

The being isolated this sea from the rest of the Far Realms, in a void from which nothing could disturb it, and left to let it run its course. An inconceivable amount of time passed, so wide in the chasm of time’s passage that a trillion years were not but a blink, and the entity returned to find that nothing had changed in the slightest, this…this Ethereal Plane had not but budged a single iota of the most subatomic of it’s most volatile material. Experiencing an alien emotion that could best be equated to disappointment, the entity decided to interfere in the Plane’s evolution.

To use analogy, the entity dipped it’s appendages into the Ethereal sea and stirred, like one would a broth, hoping to get a reaction. Finally, there was a reaction, as the stirring whirlpools formed into two polar spheres of power that became known as the Positive and Negative Energy Planes, the worlds of Creation and Destruction, Life and Death, Beginning and End.

These Planes revolved around each other, and made new worlds from their brief and rare collisions. The Elemental Planes of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air were all born from their energetic parent Planes, and their collisions with their parents made the Quasi-Elemental Planes, the Negative and Positive shades of the Elements. Fire and Positive Energy gave birth to Radiance, while Water and Negative Energy gave birth to Ice. Further still, Elements clashed to create Para-Elemental Planes, Fire and Air siring the Plane of Smog.

And so this process continued onward, until the Planes gave birth to a great descendant beholding all of their properties. It was a Plane with blue skies, stars, earth, and would soon come to bear life. This was the Prime, the Material Plane, from which fostered many worlds. But the Entity, when it interfered with the Ethereal, created not just the basics of matter, but also of sentience. Not actual sentience itself, but the idea of it, imbued in the most solid of elements only when they took light, feathery forms we come to understand in our three-dimensional world.

In the Prime Material was initially but a prismatic aether that is oft mistaken for an empty void called Space, but is in fact filled with radiation, light, base elements, and all that was required for worlds to be born. This idea of intelligence met the base matter, and from them raised the first proto-consciousnesses that came to be the Overpowers. They developed the concepts of Good, Evil, Chaos, Order, White, and Black, which were just as alien as the Far Realms themselves, but thought of as ordinary and necessary to beings that grew up in their foster.

Some of the Overpowers identified with Order, some with Chaos, some with Good, some with Evil, and some with any mix in between. The Chaotic and the Evil chose to prowl the Pholigston sea of the Void, becoming comets, stars, nebulae, and asteroids, while the Orderly and the Good became worlds, life-bearing geological incubators who shattered and infused their souls into the most basic of the reproducing chemical compounds that roamed their surfaces, and so came the most beautiful of the Multiverse’s Children, known as Life.

But as Life achieved consciousness, they also weaved their own views of the Multiverse. They dreamed, told stories, spun delusions, and put their faith and belief in that which was not necessarily true. The Prime, an amalgam of Matter and Spirit, demanded of the Inner Planes of Matter for a counterpart. And so, the souls of living beings began to bleed from their bodies at the moment of death and fell into a void of mind on the other side, the Silver Void between Planes that came to be known as a Plane of Astral in of itself. It is here that the souls of the dead, dreams from past nights, forgotten memories and discarded ideas found themselves, and also became a place where beliefs manifested.
When enough souls found themselves drifting through the formless Astral, they eventually drift to the places of rest that they believed in. Many spirits became petitioners on newly formed Outer Planes, ranging from Hades, to Mount Olympus, to the Egyptian Field of Reeds. Where they went was determined by their faith and belief and, if they had none, wound up where they were best suited. It is in these Outer Planes that the Gods people worshipped were born, and in the Astral did their corpses go when the teat of faith ran dry for their hungry, divine orifices.

But the chain was not complete, and the Outer Planes began building a bridge to the Inner. It was a Plane of Time, called forth when one of the Gods commanded for Light in the darkness, and so the Multiverse became known as the Great Wheel, and all of its laws came into place.

For the Inner lead to the Ethereal, which bore the Material, bled into the Astral that beget the Outer, digging it’s way to Time ground in the Inner. With three transitive planes, and three cornerstone planes, the Multiverse found that it had a Law of Threes, for it was in that digit that all occurrences did find themselves blotted, and by that law, the Multiverse has a trio of great cosmic laws. The other, that of belief, demanded that what must be believed must have at least a smidgen of reality behind whatever delusion coddled the belief, and the Center-of-All, which demanded that the Multiverse must have no center save but for he who observes it, for all sentients were the center of their own world, seeing it differently, unique to their own perspective.

All of these laws, all of these grand design, no matter how accidental in it’s ultimate origins, could not overturn it’s ultimate fate, for as steps were taken in the Plane of Time, the Positive Energy Plane weakened, and its Negative sibling grew in power. Entropy, it seemed, will be absolute in the end.
