Befriend my Trust (chapter 5)

Chapter 5: Reuniting

Mariah gazed up at the concrete tower. It stood alone on a snow covered plain and didn’t at all look inviting. She wondered what was inside but had long grown tired of asking unanswered questions. Jason had promised things would be explained when they reached their destination. This place she guessed was where she would get some kind of explanation.
“Coming inside?” Jason asked.
Mariah was hesitant but it was dusk and the wind was howling. She nodded and followed him in. They stood in a circular room, it was painted blue and empty apart from a spiralling staircase. She could hear voices from above and followed Jason apprehensively up the stairs.
She hardly glimpsed at the next room before someone ran into her and her vision was blocked from view by several people hugging her. She pulled away, her eyes opened wide in shock. Before her stood five people she knew very well; Mia and Abbey her two closest friends, Michael another friend and his younger sister Sophie and Chris, an ex boyfriend who she still got on with. As they moved back she saw a sixth person, Torri, a girl she didn’t get along with but right now this didn’t bother her because five people she cared about a lot were with her.
“I can’t believe it,” she choked through tears and hugged Mia and Abbey again. “How did you…what’s going on?”
“Blitz is going to explain everything now,” Abbey said. She nodded at a young woman standing back. Mariah glanced at her then did a double take, this woman had wings. Large fluttering, light, pink wings and she was as pale as the snow outside.
“Hi,” Mariah squeaked realising it was rude to stare and not to speak.
Blitz rushed forward and took Mariah’s hand, a huge grin on her face. “I’m so honoured to meet you Mariah.”
Mariah looked uncertainly at her friends. “Er… thanks.”
“Come sit.” Blitz indicated to a table and seating. The others took their places. “I will explain everything.”
Mariah took her hand from Blitz’s grasp nervously and sat between Abbey and Mia. She noticed that everyone was looking at her and her thirst for understanding increased.

“As I told the others, this is the world of Destiny. I don’t know how far it is from Earth but still we welcome you. We’re currently in the northern continent and will making our way to Shine-O-La, the most southern country and home to our creator the goddess Heaven. In Shine-O-La there is a shrine that will open a portal allowing you to go home. Now we have a long journey ahead of us beginning tomorrow, I want everyone off to bed. Mariah stay, I will answer your questions.”
Everyone else stood up and, apart from Torri, bade Mariah goodnight. “I’m so glad you’re here safe,” Abbey whispered hugging her. “We’ll talk later.”
When everyone had left Blitz took a seat closer to Mariah. “It really is so amazing to finally meet you,” she said.
“Why?” Mariah asked.
Blitz paused, biting her lip. “I want you to believe me, but I don’t think you will. I hear you Earthlings are very close minded.”
“Oh trust me I’ll believe anything after today.”
Blitz smiled softly. “It must have been such a shock, I’m sorry.” When Mariah continued to look at her expectantly she sighed and continued. “There’s this prophecy and…and it tells us that when we come under threat you will save us.”
Mariah was obviously sceptical but Blitz continued. “This world has always been peaceful. There has only been one war in all its existence but it was over briefly. But not long ago, on a island east of here, a race called the Cloran appeared. They began invading, killing, destroying everything. They’re unbeatable. This is the time the prophecy talked of and now you’re here and you can save us all.”
“I think you’ve got the wrong person!” Mariah said breathlessly. “I’m just a school girl. I’m not part of anything like this, I can’t be.”
“I thought this would happen but please believe me, you are our saviour.” Blitz was staring deeply at her.
“I’m sorry I just want to go home,” Mariah said, standing up.
“We’ll start the journey to Shine-O-La tomorrow.”
“And then I can go home?”
“You,” Blitz paused and looked away. “Yes you can go home.”
“Right well I’ll go to bed,” Mariah said. Her head was heavy; she wanted to think, to talk to those she knew, not strangers.
“Understandable,” Blitz nodded.
Mariah hurriedly went upstairs after the others. On the third floor she found comfy chairs and a balcony. Abbey, who had been looking out, turned to Mariah. “You o.k.?” She asked smiling.
“I guess,” Mariah said walking over to her. She looked out over the balcony. Everything was black, a secret just like what she was facing.
“It’s exciting isn’t it?” Abbey said. “The prophecy and everything. It’s like magic, a fairytale. Aren’t you excited?”
“I just want to go home,” Mariah muttered. “Do you believe it then? In all this prophecy stuff?”
“Well yeah,” Abbey said. “When we arrived we were all scattered across this world. But one thing was the same wherever we were; people were celebrating because you had come to save them. People were out on the streets, they were all so happy, they all knew who you were. So it’s got to be true hasn’t it?”
“It’s just so hard to believe.”
“But I wouldn’t lie to you, it’s true,” Abbey cried. She stared at Mariah. Mariah nodded slowly. “Blitz thinks you’ll believe eventually and you’re really into all this make believe stuff.”
“Yeah as stories,” Mariah replied. “Not real life and I’m not dreaming, I’ve already checked.” She pinched herself on the arm.
“We’ll be o.k.” Abbey reassured her putting her arm around her. “Everyone’s glad you’re here. I think they’re just all tired, it’s been a long day for us all, a hard one.”
“Yeah I know, and I don’t think everyone wants me here, all Torri did was glare.”
“Well you know what she’s like, idiot,” Abbey smirked.
Mariah smiled slightly. “I’m going to go to bed. I don’t think I can physically think anymore.”
“Yeah I’ll come too. Just upstairs.”
She led Mariah up more circular stairs into a room filled with beds, where the others seemed to be asleep. Some night wear lay on an empty bed for Mariah. She slipped them on under the bed and lay back staring at the ceiling. Abbey had blown the remaining lit candle out and all was dark.
Her head throbbed with thoughts, questions whirling through her head. Despite being reunited with her friends, she felt more alone than ever. She didn’t have answers she wanted. She didn’t know where she was or what would happen but nobody seemed capable of explaining properly. Already, though, she was coming to accept that this was her new reality.
