Befriend my Trust (chapter 4)

Chapter 4: The guardian and the guider

In Shine-O-La palace Heaven stood at the large southern window looking out at the setting sun. She was an extremely tall, slender woman and she was amazing to look at. Hair made of ringlets of fire and a glow illuminating from her she was someone to fear yet awe at the same time. Beside her stood a young girl, barefooted in a pale, pink dress with golden wavy hair and sparkling wings. She was talking with great excitement.
“Mariah has already arrived,” she chattered. “Jason has found her and they are both making their way to Glaca now. Everything is going to plan.”
“Not everything, I’m afraid Blitz,” Heaven sighed. “It appears we have unhappy guardians.”
“What do you mean?” Blitz asked but her question was answered by the opening of the glass door behind them. Zara stormed in followed by a teenage boy.

“Zara you can’t just go in,” he cried.
“Shut up Leon!” she snapped. “How could you?” she growled at Heaven. “I didn’t give my consent. How could you just take her?”
“How dare you barge in,” Blitz raged before Heaven could even answer. She raised one hand which was surrounded by fire. It shot at Zara who brought her arms across her chest; the speeding fire ball bounded of and burnt into nothing. Zara’s hands began to glow and so did Blitz’s. Suddenly they were both thrown across opposite ends of the room by an invisible force.
“That is enough!” Heaven shrieked. “Leon you leave. Do your job as a guardian; I will deal with Zara’s complaints.”
Leon stood for a few moments, mouth open. Then he nodded and left. The two fallen had staggered to their feet. Blitz looked slightly frightened but Zara looked furious. “She’s just a child.” She pleaded.
“I know,” Heaven replied. “But Zara I am the creator of this world, I have to protect it and the prophecy states that…”
“What if the prophecy is wrong?” Zara interrupted.
“Well let’s hope not because it’s all we have to go on.”
Blitz was scowling now. She seemed to be biting back retorts she wanted to make and Heaven had noticed. “You two are going to have to get along. We’re all in this together, Zara you are a guardian and Blitz you are the guide for our visitors.”
“Visitors? As in plural? How’d that happen? Who’s here?” Blitz asked.
“Somebody used some magic of her own and dragged Mariah’s friends with her. Well Zara?”
“I thought Mariah could do with the company,” she retorted. “They leave when Mariah’s finished the journey, can’t they?”
“That’s not the point,” Blitz snarled. “It makes things more complicated.”
“Actually it could work to our advantage,” Heaven said. Blitz’s mouth opened in shock. “Mariah could do with all the help she can get and if they are her real friends then they will surely protect her. I just wonder, why didn’t you bring her family Zara?”
“Because her mom may have cancer.”
“What’s cancer?” Blitz said as her curiosity took over her hatred of Zara.
“An illness on Earth, a deadly one,” Zara said but she addressed Heaven. “I knew there was no treatment here so I left her family behind, her mom may need medicine, only Earth can provide her with.”
“So you left the family behind, understandable,” Heaven nodded.
“Have her friends been briefed?” Blitz said to Heaven.
“Partly,” she replied. “The journey begins tomorrow, they must be totally prepared. Blitz you’ll meet them all and Mariah tonight.”
“Heaven please reconsider?” Zara pleaded again, as if suddenly remembering what was happening. “Look her mom could be terminally ill. Please let her go home, we’ll find another way to defeat the Cloran.”
“This is the only way,” Heaven murmured, her voice filled with worry. “My people are suffering, dying at the hands of the Cloran. I have to act now.”
“But there might be another way.” Zara swallowed back tears.
“But this is the only way we know of Zara, I will give her the choice when she reaches Shine-O-La. If she wants to go home she can, I won’t stop her. I, however, will not send her home until she reaches Shine-O-La. I want her to see this world, the glory of it and the suffering of my people.”
“Fine,” Zara relented.
“But she wont refuse,” Blitz interrupted. “If she’s the person you described to us she won’t turn her back on dying people. What’s got you so scared anyway?”
Zara saw the look in Blitz’s eyes and heard the tone in her voice. Blitz knew something she didn’t want Heaven to find out. “Nothings wrong.”
“You’re very concerned all of a sudden, considering you knew all this was going to happen. What’s wrong Zara?” She smiled cruelly.
“Blitz what is the meaning of this?”
“Oh don’t you know?” Blitz asked Heaven. “Zara’s got herself a life on Earth she doesn’t want to leave. See that ring on her finger; she’s engaged to be married.”
Heaven stared at Zara. “Blitz please go now to Glaca, Jason and Mariah will be arriving shortly.” Reluctantly, Blitz left the room, glaring at Zara.
“I’m sorry,” Zara began. “I didn’t mean for it to happen but he asked me and I couldn’t say no, I loved him.”
“I can’t stop you falling in love, but I’m sorry you have to forget that life now. Your duty is to protect Mariah. You, Leon and Jason all have your fate laid out in front of you and you have to follow it.”
Zara sighed and nodded. “Please excuse me.” She left quickly and leant against the wall in the hallway. Sinking to the floor she put her head in her knees and sobbed.
A hand touched her shoulder, above her Leon stood, his young face smiling down at her. “Get off me, you’re pathetic. Not supporting me in there.”
“What are you afraid of?” he said softly. “The end?”
Zara wiped her face roughly with her hand. “I’m not afraid to die.”
