The concept that gunpowder can make things move is pretty easy to figure out. You blow something up with it and it flies. People are killed by shrapnel. A gun is simply a device used to channel shrapnel in a particular direction. Not a great leap of the imagination.

Exactly. Even a monkey can make go boom if it will crack a juicy nut.
Might as well eliminate gunpowder. Napalm and flammable stuff, now, that might be something else. (Greek fire, anyone?)
As to the thirteen colonies:
Figure out some way that the natives can stand a chance against the Europeans other than weaponry. i.e. a cure for some of the diseases discovered by well-meaning Jesuits.

If a movie can be made like Road Warriors (with Mel Gibson) and a book can be written like George Orwell's 1984. Why should anyone doubt your ability to create a story of a country with no guns? I think it is an amazing idea. I really like the idea that the US is still in the 13 colonies and is still fearful of the "Natives". Go for it but, i say not to spend too much time on explaining that there are no guns. Just let it be a brief part of the story, like a passing character or a change in setting.

Instead of removing anything blow-upable, couldnt it evolve differently. Instead of someone figuring out how to make a gune, maybe instead they make a big cannon that shoots arrows. It may not be as good as guns, but if they come across this first then why continue to develop new weapons. You could have exploding arrows. Instead of an arrowhead have a bag of gunpowder and when it hits sumthing goes on and it blows up.

The Chinese actually came up with the exploding arrow.

I thought that was Rambo.
Look, you want a world where there are bombs but not guns, just DO it. THere is absolutely no reason it should be that way except you want it that way for some reason. Nobody can help you out with this.

I think i'm going to go with it. The thirteen colonies was just a rough idea on how things were going to form, and I needed a base area of some kind to work off of. I'll do some research and I might even base it somewhere else. The thought of America's original "melting pot" is what gave me the thought to set it there. Also, some states like Pennsylvania were obtained by peaceful means and would have been obtained with or without guns. I'll see how it plays out. Thanks for everyone's input.
