Personally, I wouldn't use that idea. There's a lot of movies and stories about that happening. I'd only say go for it, if it can be done in a truly original way.

Half of my version was mostly traps and puzzles, it didn't even have NPCs planned until half way through (I think). But then it wasn't so much about the game than it was about a girl trying to save her older brother from the 'alien game' (I use the term loosely) after he's been trapped in there for a year.

As you can see, Sci-freak. The idea has been used a lot and you'll most likely struggle to be original, but if you wanna then have a go.
