The Triplets Of Freshia (1760 words)
It was a hot night, as were most nights across the lands of Freshia, when three babies were born to the same mother. The triplets born that night were special before their little lives even began, for they were the second ever lot of triplets born since the beginning of time. Women from all over the land flocked to offer their congratulations to the proud young mother, who after much deliberation named her daughters Alissia, Syria and Karmel.
Until the age of ten the girls grew up the same, despite having very different appearances and personalities. They, like every other girl of the land, received a basic education. During their ten years they had been taught to read and write, and to count the numbers and add them together. They had been given a basic understanding of science, and were taught a simple history of the land in which they lived. They were taught manners, and that they should always respect the men, and that their place was to help the men and boys.
Alissia was more accustomed to the boys than any of the other girls. She spent her time after school hanging around the courtyard with some girls and boys from the two schools, flicking bits of wood into the well and laughing at some of the geeky girls that hurriedly rushed by. Karmel sometimes joined her sister, although she always felt slightly out of sorts around so many pretty girls, many of which were older than her. She would sit towards the back of the group and laugh at some of the jokes that her sister told, wishing so much that she could be as confident as Alissia around people.
Syria on the other hand would rather spend her days curled up in her bedroom with a new book telling tales of amazing heroines and the terrible struggles they go through. She was always devoted to her studies at school 100%, and would always sit for hours putting extra effort into all of their homework assignments.
Now, at the age of ten girls are split into one of three groups; Genisii, Saysii and Venii. The Genisii girls are the caring ones, and most common type of girl. They will continue their education in things like hospitality, and they will learn how to teach the future generations of children. These ladies are expected to marry a man and have many children. The Saysii are the brilliantly intelligent young ladies. These are the only girls that are permitted to work as equals alongside men, although very few girls are deemed smart enough to become Saysii. Venii are also less common. These girls are the most beautiful in the lands of Freshia. Venii are not picked randomly, only the extremely attractive are picked for this, and they grow up to entertain the gentlemen.
One day, a few weeks before the girls were placed into their group, they asked their grandfather why they have to be separated. He sat for a minute, wondering how to tell them, and then began.
“Let me tell you a story from the past,” he told them. The triplets grabbed a cushion each and they sat in front of the fire, watching their grandfather with admiration and waiting for the tale to begin.
“Many many years ago, years before you, and even I were born, the first ever lot of triplets were born. They were all little girls, like you three, and their mother named them Sayso, Venus and Genisus. Now these little girls were like all others at the time, growing up to have a little education and learn a few things about life. From a young age though, these girls were special. Sayso, the eldest by minutes, was extremely smart. She would spend her days studying books and inventing new things to do. Over the years she had invented new things, some of which we still use today in our life. It was her, that wrote the first ever book about science, and it was she that discovered Diamonds.
“Venus was not very smart however, but she made up for her lack of brains, with her beauty. People say that she had the prettiest face in all the lands of Freshia, and she would spend her days entertaining young gentlemen in one of her many cake houses, or singing for crowds in the courtyard. Her name was known everywhere, and people travelled from far lands to hear her heavenly voice. It was rumoured, that there was even a group of Presian men who ventured across the ocean just to glimpse her beauty.
“Finally there was Genisus, who was neither beautiful nor clever. For years she lived under her sisters’ shadows, watching from the sidelines as they got all of the attention. During school she focused not on her studies, but on the bird fluttering around outside. At the weekends she would spend her time teaching the younger and poorer children how to read and write, for back then very few people could afford to go to school. As she got older she learnt more and more about medicines, and she came up with a whole new range of painkillers and creams to help the ill. Deciding that she wanted to dedicate her life to the less fortunate than her, she set up the very first hospital. It was there that she healed people, and made the ill better. She also over the years taught the less intelligent, and helped those who needed helping. Genisus was also the only of the sisters to bear a child, and she was a wonderful mother, so caring and thoughtful.
“Now all of these sisters were very special, and the things they had done through their lives made a huge difference. It was after that that the men, as even back then they had final say, decided that instead of all women staying at home to clean, cook and have children, they could go out and do some of the things that the triplets did. And so, from that generation onwards, at the age of ten girls were split into one of the three groups.
“Now that, my little angels, is a sign of good things to come from you three. Triplets are so rare; it must be a sign from someone that you are destined to do amazing things. You won’t disappoint your granddad now will you kiddies?” their grandfather joked, smiling fondly at them all.
“No, we won’t, we promise granddad.” Syria chirped. “Now tell us another story please,” she begged, before their granddad once more began a tale of three young princesses who were loved across the land.
A few weeks passed before the deciding of the groups. The deciding was done during a ceremony, at which each girl would be examined both physically and academically. The girls were anxious about that day, and they hoped that they would all be in the same group as one another.
Around mid-day all of the children and their mothers filled into the courtyard outside the school building. The day was once again hit, the sun beating down upon the backs of the spectators. In the centre of the courtyard a little fountain trickled cool water over its sides, allowing hot mothers to splash their face to cool down.
The girls, like all others in their year, lined up against the front wall of the school. Karmel and Syria stood together towards the back of the line, and Alissia waited with another girl from her year and they stood whispering to one another until everyone was silenced. The headmaster and main teacher, Miss Flayuri, was standing on the middle step before the courtyard, addressing the adults about the day’s ceremony. Having explained the procedure, she called the first child forth.
It took only half an hour before the head teacher reached Alissia Myuta. Boldly, she strutted up to the centre step of the stairs, her head held high and her hair fluttering gently in the wind. One of the boys who had climbed upon the fence to watch the ceremony whistled as she stood next to Miss Flayuri, which brought evil stares from the mothers.
“Now child, let me see your school records.” Miss Flayuri said, holding out her hand for the piece of paper that Alissia held. Having scanned it quickly she folded it and looked down upon Alissia.
“Your school records are not very good at all Myuta. Although it says here that you have been recommended for Venii. Come close child so I can examine your face.”
Alissia stepped closer, silently pleased that she had been mentioned for Venii. She had always admired the young ladies who escorted the rich gentlemen down the streets and in the cake houses, which she was still to young to enter. She looked up at Miss Flayuri, her big blue eyes watching the teachers. Her skin was fair with freckles dotted on her cheeks, and her blonde/brown hair tumbled in curls down her back. Alissia looked up at Miss through her dark eyelashes that swept out like fans, and she smiled slightly. Miss examined her face with admiration, although she kept her face expressionless. Having studied her face enough, she pulled Alissia to one side where the other “judges” stood. Presenting Alissia to them, she then had to stand for ten minutes with several different faces examining her own. It was a though job placing girls in groups other than Genisii, and the judges took their time deciding.
Finally, Miss Flayuri walked her back to the middle step and presented her with a Silver cloak, the cloak of the Venii. Alissia wrapped it around her shoulders and walked down the stairs to meet her mother, hiding the huge smile she wanted to give with a cool glance in the direction of the whistling boy.
Next to be judged was Karmel. She looked terrified as she rushed to the middle step and stood next to Miss Flayuri, her thumbs twiddling behind her back. She wished that she would be considered for Venii or Saysii, but she knew even then that she was a Genisii. Looking up at Miss she saw the look of boredom on her face as she examined her face. Karmel has dark brown hair and dark eyes, nothing that stood out particularly. She was good at her studies at school, she could read and write well, but she struggled with her numbers, not that she lacked in effort. It wasn’t enough for either Saysii or Genisii though.
After taking only minutes to consider, Miss Flayuri handed Karmel a purple cloak, the cloak of Genisii, and she went to join her sisters in the crowd. Finally Syria strolled up to meet Miss Flayuri, her head high and her walk bold. She was confident that she would be selected for Saysii; her teacher had told her as much the previous day. She handed Miss her school record sheet and stood back patiently whilst she examined it. After spending a few minutes looking at the sheet Miss asked Syria to look at her. She raised her head to the light. Syria was the least attractive of the three, and she knew it fine well. Her dark ginger hair was scraggly and hard to tame, and her face was covered with dark freckles.
Miss Flayuri took only seconds looking at her face before turning and grabbing a turquoise cloak and handing it to Syria. She was from then on a Saysii. Running from the stage she hugged her mother.
“I am so proud of all of you angels,” their mother cried, tears seeping form the corners of her eyes. Alissia, being the cooler of the three, pulled away from her mothers grasp.
“Mam, you are embarrassing us. Do you mind if I go and meet some of friends?” she asked. Her mother nodded, and Alissia disappeared into the crowd.
“Now, if neither of you two want to go off we’ll go home and tell your father,” their mam said to the two remaining children. With that they set of for home, which was a good ten minute walk from the school courtyard.

Hi heather! I would just like to say that I did enjoy reading this. It is good to see that you are devoted and have already written so much. Often times people don't follow through, but it seems you are very dedicated.
I would like to say that it seems almost like a children's story. I don't know if this is intentional, but it is very simplistic. If you want it to be more adult oriented go back through and give more details and more things for readers to think about. So far it is also a little predictable.
But, it is still a job well done!

thanks for reading, and i am glad that you enjoyed it. i haven't yet decided who the intended audience is yet actually, but i think i am aiming for adults as the main story is going to focus on when the triplets are adults. this is just setting it up really so that you know what is going on. i will go through and add more detail, i actually think i need to develop the girls a little more so i'll do that aswell.
thanks again for reading,
Heather

i know what you mean. the problem i have is that whilst i am setting up the story so that people know what's meant to be going on, it all sounds rather boring. it'll hopefully get better as it goes along, ad i have tried to re-write it a little sinse you posted. do you think it sounds any better?
thanks for reading,
Heather
