Mistaken Misnomers
What if… Such an innocent question, and one that should be asked whenever a decision is made. What if Odessa Sands had lived? What if the assassin that killed her had been caught? What if her parents hadn’t called upon a top secret organization made up of politicians, lawyers, and secret service members the world over to find her killers, and stop them before they murdered another person in the family?
What if Annabelle Merman didn’t look almost exactly like Odessa?
It is said that, somewhere in the world, there is somebody who looks exactly like you. A cosmic twin, if you will. Well, unfortunately for Annabelle, her twin was a billionaire computer networking heiress who just happened to be murdered by an underground insurgency, but before she died, she went into a coma. Now the rest of the world thinks Odessa is still alive, and still an insurgency target. Annabelle is given the chance of a lifetime: Step into the shoes of Odessa and become the target of the insurgency, giving the organization a chance to catch the killers, and in return, receive the $4.5 billion that Odessa would have inherited.
The only catch? Anna has to become the dead woman. Her friends, family, everyone will be told that she’s the one 6ft. under, and only after the killer is caught can she return to her life. This means giving up any hope of finding her fiancée, moving into the Sands’ mansion, and becoming a pretty little rich girl princess. But if her guards aren’t careful, she could wind up as dead as the woman she’s impersonating.
Is it worth it?
A worthwhile plot? What do you think?

Dorian sat up as well, massaging his leg, which had swollen interestingly and was throbbing, even after the healing. Kacey went over and poked at it. “OUCH!!!! What did you do that for?!”
Kacey shrugged, “I don’t know. Seemed like a good idea at the time.”

I like it... sounds like a blurb off the back of a novel.

Chapter 1: Mediocre Missives
“A Matter of Utmost Importance Requires Your Attentions.” That was what the little envelope had said. Well, Annabelle Merman was no fool, and the invitation had looked like a scam, so she threw it away.
“My Attentions indeed!” She sniffed, turning back to her research without a second thought to the little parchment envelope now sitting in her trash. It had been years since anybody had thought her important enough for anything, not since she’d graduated college and hidden herself in a law firm’s research department. Creditors forgot her, since she paid everything on time. Men looked right through her, and she traveled so often she didn’t even own a pet anymore. Flyaway brown hair, pulled up out of her face in a tight bun that hid any semblance of softness in her features, a pair of out-of-date glasses, and baggy clothes all came together and made her seem nearly invisible.
A soft knock at the door a few hours later startled her out of her stupor, and she practically levitated off her chair, a rain of plastic cups, empty cans, and papers crashing to the floor. The map of the London Underground she’d been reading, that, for some unknown reason had the entirety of the court records for McDuffie vs. Drury around the perimeter, snapped back into a roll.
“Ms. Merman?” a head poked into her cramped, windowless office. Andrew Burns’ little daughter Megan came into view. At eight years old, she was tiny for her age, and very much an introvert. “My daddy asked me to tell you that you should be ready to leave in a few minutes.”
“Ready to leave for what?” Annabelle blinked, looking at the clock. It was nearly 10 PM.
“I dunno. He just said to be ready to leave. Want me to ask?”
“If you don’t mind, duckie.”
“Alright.” The little waif scurried back out into the halls.
As Annabelle gathered up her things and stuck them haphazardly into her bags, the little footsteps returned. “He asked if you even read the invitation before you threw it away, and didn’t say nothin’ else.”
“Inva… Now what in the hell does a scam have to do with anything?!”
The little girl just shrugged and walked out, unconcerned with any of it.
“Oh bugger all of this, I don’t care.” Annabelle grumbled, pulling the paper out of the trash but not opening it. “Unless it involved a stiff drink and a decent book I don’t care at all.”
“Well, I’ll promise a drink, but I think you read enough at work,” Andrew smirked from the doorway.
“Why is it that whenever you get close to me I want to punch you?”
“Because you’re a mean old witch and have no respect for your betters?”
“Oh yes, Of course,” she replied dryly.
“Come on, lighten up Anna!” He laughed lightly.
“I’ll lighten up when I get home, which is going to be very soon. So if you’ll excuse me…” she tried to get past him and into the hall. He didn’t move.
“Nope, you’re coming with me first.” There was now a hard edge to his voice.
“Why in the name of heaven and earth would I go with you anywhere?”
“Do you EVER read ANY of your mail?!”
“No, I don’t, now move.”
“You’re going to come with me to meet some people who want to offer you a job,” he snapped sternly.
“I’m quite content with the job I have.” Her voice now matching his in cold, steely determination.
“No, you’re not, and I’m not moving until you promise to come with me.”
“Andrew… please I’m tired! I just want to go home and get drunk!” she looked at him pleadingly.
He just raised his eyebrow at her. “I’m not falling for that, come on. You act just like my ex-wife did when she didn’t want to do something.” He grabbed her arm and dragged her out to his car. “You need to meet these people if you ever want to get anywhere in the world…”
“I like where I am! I told you that! Stop it this is kidnapping!” She shrieked indignantly, hitting his arm with her bag, flinching when she realized that she’d probably just wrecked her third blackberry. Thrashing and digging her heels in as best she could, she vehemently fought against his grip. Andrew set his mouth in a grim line and continued pulling her into the elevator.
“Come along Megan,” he called. She followed obediently, and dimly, Anna pitied the poor girl for having such an anal father. She’d have hell when she became a teenager…
The elevator doors shut, and Anna snapped back to her own predicament. She was being dragged by her boss to an unknown destination for an underground meeting/job interview… This screamed bad thriller movie, and she was having none of it. “FOR THE LAST TIME ANDREW! LET ME GO!” Anna screamed as loudly as she could. She was afraid now, and angry, and tired, and unusually bitchy. It was only vaguely registering in her mind that she was hitting somebody, her boss, at all. Her timid, nonviolent, calmer mind was yelling at her for even contemplating getting physical…
Annabelle came to the conclusion, yet again, that the world hated her.
(Completely raw is going to need a lot of reworking, but here's a snippet from chapter 1)
