FANTASY ISLAND
Chapter Two
The door slammed behind Keziah as he stormed into his room, and threw himself onto his bed. What good is leavers if your stinking little brother has to come with you? The thought flashed through his head as his fathers heavy footsteps sounded up the hallway.
“Keziah Harrison!” yelled his father, Glenn, “open this door right now!”
Keziah didn’t answer but instead covered his head with a big blue pillow. Year 12 leavers were in two months, and he and his four friends had decided to go as far away from the stupid ghost town they lived in as possible. Somewhere with lots of hot chicks, preferably by the sea, so they could learn how to surf, and a place where they could party all night long. Now his dreams of partying were being crushed by the thought of having to take his five year old brother, Tyler, with him. It was extremely unfair, how could his parents do this to him?
“Don’t, bang so hard, honey you will knock down the door” his mousy little mother, Helen whispered, she hated it when they fought.
“If it means that I will be able to get into the room, then I will bang as hard as I like” Glenn yelled childishly back at her.
“Honey, would you open the door for us, please? We just want to talk it over, okay?” she was such a kind woman, he never could say no to her. Keziah got up and opened the door, then slumped back down on his bed, glaring at Glenn who was now standing with his arms crossed in front of him, breathing hard from fury and exhaustion.
“Why I shouldn’t ground you for that childish scene you jut performed I don’t know.” He huffed, and glared back at his son. Helen sat down on the bed next to Keziah and started stroking his hand.
“Now, lets all just try to have a friendly conversation, without biting each others head off, okay?” she said rather too positively, Keziah said nothing, but continued to glare at Glenn.
“As you know very well, your mother and I have already booked to go away around the same time as your deserters –”
“Leavers!”
“Leavers, whatever, and you are the only one to look after Tyler, because we cant take him with us where we are going!” he did have a point there, Glenn and Helen didn’t trust anyone to look after their littlest son, after an incident that happened when he was two, where the babysitter set fire to the kitchen whilst trying to make herself waffles. Their grandparents were definitely not on the list either, both Glenn’s parents were dead, and Helen’s were quite insane. The last time Keziah and Tyler stayed with them Grandma had made pumpkin soup, adding a whole bottle of bourbon, and Grandpa tried to sell Tyler for a hundred and fifty dollars at the local markets. And as for aunts and uncles, both Glenn and Helen were only children, so they had none.
That left Keziah as the only responsible person to look after Tyler. “But I cant take him!” he said, “he’ll only be in the way.”
“Look, if you take Ty, I will pay for you to go where ever you wish. That means all expenses, what ever you want there you can have, I know I can trust you not to abuse this responsibility.” Keziah stared at Glenn in disbelief, he was actually going to pay…? But wait, there had to be a catch…
“What about my friends, will you pay for them too?”
Glenn hesitated, being a big time lawyer, the biggest in the state, did have its benefits. Thy were incredibly rich, not to mention the fact that being a lawyer didn’t just start from Glenn. His father, his father’s father, and his father’s father’s father had all been lawyers, which meant that after both Glenn’s mother and father died he had inherited a lot, and when he and Helen died the same fortune would go to Keziah. Of course Glenn had enough to pay for Keziah’s friends too.
“That’s pushing it… but…” Glenn frowned then opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted buy the loud ring of a mobile. He pulled the phone from his pocket and answered the call.
“Hello?... Oh Matt, hi! Yeah… oh yeah… yes, yes I know, and I think it will mean a great change in the judge’s decision…” Glenn nodded, completely forgetting about his wife and son sitting on the bed in front of him.
“Great, just great.” Keziah muttered.
“Don’t worry honey, I’m sure he will be quick,” Helen looked up at Glenn, “Glenn? Glenn, baby, do hurry, we really do need to make a definite decision now. Leavers, baby, your son…”
Glenn frowned at Helen then seemed to notice that Keziah was still there, “Oh yeah, can you hold on a second Matt… yeah thanks.” He looked back at his family, “yes I will pay for them as well, but your not to go silly about his okay, don’t forget that Tyler will be there too. Now I really have to take this call, I will see you both later.” He turned and left the room.
Helen smiled at Keziah, and pulled a small pamphlet from an apron pocket. “Here, I found a great place for you to go,” she held it out to him, “it’s an island, so you can learn to surf like you wanted too, and it says the wether is fine everyday of the year. And guess what, there is a kiddy centre, so you wont have to look after Tyler!” she grinned, and Keziah gave her an odd look.
“I thought you didn’t want any babysitters, you remember what happened last time…” her smile grew wider yet again.
“That’s your father, what he doesn’t know wont hurt him.”
Keziah took the pamphlet from her hands, and flipped through it.
“Fantasy island,” he said, “sounds cool.”
okay that was a bit silly, but it does get better.
