Evil's Reign:
Chapter 1: A Day Like Any Other
Quote:
The alarm next to my bed rang with its loud and obnoxious noises. I groaned and
rolled over to shut it off. To tired to open my eyes, I felt around the
nightstand. As I groped around the various objects laying on the nightstand, I
found the alarm. I quickly shut it off, and rolled back over to fall asleep once
more.
Again I awoke; feeling much more refreshed this time. I opened my eyes and
looked around, the sun was shining outside my window. Considering that I
normally awoke much earlier then the sun, this brought a sort of distress to my
mind. I glanced over at my clock; it displayed 7:12am. "Oh crap!" I said as I
jumped off my bed and ran to my closet. I quickly grabbed some clothes and ran
into the bathroom. "I can't be late!" I mumbled as I struggled to get dressed,
brush my teeth, and comb my hair at the same time. As I stumbled about trying to
prepare myself for the day before me, my mind raced with the stress and anxiety
of being late to work… again. Mr. Waters, my boss, had made it quite clear the
last time I was late that if I couldn't show up on time, I shouldn't show up at
all. I was finally ready to go, and I ran to the door. I swung it open and
started towards my car. "@#%$!" I screamed as I realized my car had been stolen!
I quickly looked around my empty driveway; skid marks could be seen leaving my
house. In the blink of an eye an already bad morning just got a hundred times
worse. I wanted to go back inside and call the police to report the theft, but
as I glanced down at my watch I realized it was now already 7:35am. I had less
than 30 minutes to get to work!
Knowing that my car wasn't going to magically reappear, I ran down to the
closest bus stop. An older woman was sitting on the bench waiting for the bus as
well. I nodded in her direction and said, "Good morning, ma'am." She didn't
reply, but simply sat there staring out into the horizon. I examined the
schedule hanging on the pole, the next bus was supposed to arrive at 7:45am. I
would be cutting it close, but I was confident that I would make it to work
within a reasonable amount of time. I sat down on the bench, and waited.
About twenty minutes later the bus finally pulled up and squealed it's breaks.
Three people got off, and walked down the street. I climbed up the bus steps and
gestured to help the old woman onto the bus. She simply sat there and stared,
never even looking up at the bus. After a few seconds I simply climbed into the
bus and the doors closed behind me. Looking around the bus, I saw that the
atmosphere was anything but pleasant. I quickly found a seat towards the center
of the bus. It seemed the bus stopped to pick up more people every ten seconds.
At this rate I'd never get to work!
While I waited for the bus to reach my destination, I struggled with the fact
that my car had been stolen. I didn't quite know how to deal with that. A mere
week before I had bought all new tires for it. I tried to calm myself down,
knowing that where nothing I could about at this point in time. After work I
would call the police and report it as missing. I was confident that it wouldn't
be long till I was reunited with my vehicle.
Finally, the bus pulled up to the stop closest to my office. I got up and made
my way towards the door. "Have a nice day, sir!" the driver said through a
smile, I smirked back at her. As soon as I had stepped off the last step the bus
doors flew shut and it sped off to the next location. I started running towards
the office building I worked in. After a minute or so I finally reached the
building. I flew through the door and ran straight for my desk.
"Your late again, Robert." A voice said to me. It was Andrew, the person in the
cubicle next to mine, "You don't think the boss noticed do you?" my question was
quickly answered for me. "Robert, can you come into my office please?" a voice
called out across the large room. I got up and walked towards the large office
at the end of the hall of cubicles. "Close the door please." Mr. Waters said as
I entered his office, "Mr. Waters, I'm really sorry I was late today. My car was
stolen and I had to take the bus… I tried to get here faster but I…" Mr. Waters
cut my excuses short, "Robert, I feel for you. I really do. But I'm trying to
run a company here. How does it look to the other employees if you're always
coming in late?" he said in a very stern tone of voice, "Umm… not very good
sir." I said stammered, "That's right, Robert. That's why I'm going to have to
let you go." He said. I stepped back; I had just been fired! I didn't know what
to say. "You'll get your final check at the end of day. That's all." Mr. Waters
said as he motioned me to go back to work.
I walked slowly back to my desk. I must have had the worst look on my face,
because everyone I passed seemed to know that I was very disturbed. I sat down
at my desk and started working. "Hey man, what happened?" Andrew whispered to
me, "I got fired. Today is my last day." I replied in a stuttering voice, "Oh
man, that's harsh. Are you all right?" He said, "Yea. Sure… I'll be fine." I
replied. We both went back to work. As I sat at my desk I couldn't help but want
to break down and start crying. Why was God punishing me like this? What had I
done to deserve this? I could barely keep my composure through the day. It
didn't help that this must have been the longest day in recorded history. It
seemed as if 5 o'clock was never going to arrive. When the clock finally showed
5:00pm, a woman came to my desk and handed me an envelope. I knew it contained
my final check. She smiled and walked off.
Not long after that everyone in the office started to get up and leave. Andrew
got up and walked over to my cubicle, "Hey man, you want to go get some beers or
something?" he asked, "Can't, my car was stolen this morning." I replied, "Oh
man, that must really suck dude.", he said shocked. "I think I'm just going to
walk home and die." I said in a most monotone voice. Andrew looked towards me
with a sympathetic glance, and then went on with his own business. I got up and
walked out of the building. I couldn't help but feel bad for being so rude to
Andrew, but I wanted this day to just end. I walked outside and started towards
my house.
As I walked home I saw people in their cars driving past, and stray dogs
rummaging through the garbage. People passed me on the sidewalk, and I felt as
if I would have been better off dead. Slowly the sky began to get dim, and I
felt small drops of water fall down onto my shoulder. The sky got real dark and
it began to really rain hard, "Oh God, this is just PERFECT!" I yelled as the
rain began to really come down. At this point I was in the middle of an
abandoned industrial zone. Looking around frantically I saw a door open on one
of the factories. I ran towards the large abandoned factory and cautiously
entered the door. At the time it seemed like a fine place to wait out the storm.
I stepped inside the dark building and watched the rain come down outside. After
a few minutes I heard something behind me, I spun around a peered into the
darkness. "Hello, is anybody there?" I called into the darkness, but there was
no reply. I turned back around and looked out into the rain. Feeling a little
discontent standing in this dark building, with weird noises. I heard a train's
whistle blow off in the distance. The rain was starting to let up, and I was
getting ready to start the trip back to my house. I leaned down to pick up my
briefcase, when I once again heard a strange sound behind me. I spun around
again, but this time I could see something. There was a very faint outline of
what looked like a man.
"Hello. Hello!" I called out, but there was no reply. Suddenly the object began
to move towards me. Slowly it crept closer and closer. I could hear the loud
footsteps coming towards me. I backed up a couple steps, but as soon as I moved
the object leapt forward and landed right in front of me. The object was indeed
a man, but there was something… odd about him. His skin was very pale, and he
had a strange shaped jaw. "What do you want?" I stammered, "Your blood!" the man
replied. Suddenly he put his hands on each side of my head and bent my head to
the side, displaying my neck to him. He opened his mouth and viciously dug his
teeth into my neck. I screamed out in pain, but no one was around to hear me. I
raised my hands and begin scratching at his face. Blood poured out of his cheek,
and dripped all over my neck. Yet he continued to bite and suck my own blood.
Then as suddenly as he had begun, he stopped. He pulled his blood-covered mouth
off of my neck, and released his grip. I felt very weak, and could barely hold
myself up. I saw him run off inside the building, and then everything went
black.
I groaned as I picked myself up off the floor. My neck throbbed with the worst
pain I had ever felt. I shook my head and looked around, everything was dark. I
blinked a couple times, and tried to adjust my eyes. Slowly I began to see
outlines of the things around me. I glanced down at my watch; it showed 8:45pm,
the sun had been down for hours. I got up and begin walking back to my house.
My mind felt as if it was ready to explode. Not only had I lost my job, lost my
car, and been brutally attacked by some psycho, my stomach burned with the most
painful craving I had ever had. I felt very weak, and could barely walk. As I
stumbled down the sidewalk I couldn't quite put my finger on what I wanted, but
I really, really, wanted it. I finally made it to my house, and entered the
front door.
I flipped the light switch on, suddenly I felt as if I was on fire! I fell to
the floor and screamed in pain. I rolled around on the ground, I felt as if my
skin was being burned off. I reached up and turned off the light. Suddenly the
pain ceased. I got up off the floor and looked myself over. I appeared to be
fine. My mind raced with confusion, why was I suddenly so sensitive to light? I
stumbled around my house, and picked up a flashlight. I turned it on, and
pointed it in front of my body. Even though I couldn't handle light, I couldn't
see very well in the dark either. I walked into my kitchen and opened the
refrigerator. The light came on, and my skin burned once again. I quickly
reached over and held the little button to keep the light off. I looked around
the refrigerator with my flashlight, searching for something to eat. Nothing
looked good, but I was very, very hungry.
A plate of raw hamburger sat on the top shelf. For some inexplicable reason,
that was what I wanted. I slowly reached in and picked up the plate. I set it
down on the counter next to the refrigerator. Reaching across the kitchen I
opened a drawer and pulled out a fork. Slowly, I poked the raw hamburger with my
fork. A bit of blood oozed out of the blob of meat. I can't describe the feeling
I felt as the blood ran down the side of the meat. Before I knew I was devouring
the raw hamburger. Though my mind was disgusted, my body couldn't have been
happier. It tasted like vanilla ice cream to me, and the bloodier it was, the
better. I ate the whole pound of meat, and finally I didn't feel so bad…
physically. After I had finished the meat, it struck me what I had just done. I
suddenly felt sick, and ran into the bathroom. Stumbling around I leaned over
the toilet and attempted to induce vomiting. I opened my mouth and went to put
my finger in my throat, but instead I pricked my finger on my front tooth. I
slowly got up and went to the mirror. After noticing that my skin was very pale,
I opened my mouth and was shocked at what I saw. My two front teeth where
perfectly pointed, and very sharp. I looked down at my finger; a single drop of
blood was on the tip. I washed it off, yet I saw no cut or hole of any kind in
my skin! Stunned, I turned around and walked into my living room, and sat down
on the couch. I turned off the flashlight, and grabbed the TV remote. As I
switched the television on, my body began to burn again. I quickly turned the TV
off, and sat on the couch. I didn't know what to do.
I couldn't sleep, I couldn't watch TV, and I was bored. Not wanting to waste my
time on the couch moping all night, I got up and went outside. I figured that
taking a walk would help me calm down and maybe help me get some sleep.
As I opened the door, I noticed the moon was shining quite brightly. I
cautiously stuck my hand outside, expecting to feel that burning sensation
again. To my surprise, I felt nothing. I stepped outside, and felt fine. Quite
surprised at the fact that even the slightest amount of light, such as a
refrigerator light caused me to feel immense pain, and yet this very bright
moonlight didn't seem to affect me at all. After about an hour or so of walking
I came up to the city. I saw the streetlights over the road, and knew better
then to take the risk of entering the heavily lit city. So I turned around and
started walking the other way.
As I walked, a dog came out of nowhere and started biting my ankle. It was just
a small dog, but it was quite annoying. I kicked the dog off my ankle, and
continued walking. A few seconds later I felt the dog biting my ankle again,
"Damn it dog, go away!" I said as I kicked the dog again. It appeared to have
got the point, and started walking in the opposite direction. My fists clenched,
and I felt an amazing amount of raw hatred towards that small animal. I
continued walking along, thinking about all that had happened to me that day.
Suddenly, I felt the dog on my ankle once more. "All right you damn dog, you
want a piece of me! How's this!" I called out as I knelt down and punched the
dog with all my might. It squealed in pain and fell over. I walked up to it and
kicked it again, and again. Now the dog was bloody and groaning. I felt nothing
but rage, as I punched the dog again and again. Blood flew up on my face and
body. I just kept beating the dog into a bloody pulp.
With every punch I felt it's frail bones crack and break. After about 30 seconds
it stopped squealing when I hit it. I slowly got up and looked around. Blood was
everywhere, all over the sidewalk, my face, and my body. I backed up a few
steps, and started to wipe the blood off my face. Some blood dripped onto my
lips, and it tasted so good. I began licking the blood off of my hands. I knelt
down and began scooping the dog blood into my hands and drinking it. When I had
enough, I picked the dog up and threw him into the trees behind the sidewalk.
Slowly I turned around and started walking home again. After a few minutes I
fell to my knees and started crying. I had never hurt anything before, and now I
had just brutally killed somebody's dog! I couldn't handle what was happening to
me anymore. I didn't understand why I was so sensitive to light, why I wanted to
drink blood, and why I had so much rage. All that I could think was that I was
having a mental breakdown. So much had happened to me in such a small amount of
time that I couldn't process it all properly. I sat there breaking down for a
few minutes, until a bright light came towards me. I turned, and saw a cop car
driving down the road in my direction.
It pulled up next to me, and stopped. "Hey, you all right, sir?" the cop called
out from his window, "I… I don't know." I stammered while tears ran down my
face. The cop looked at me, and saw the blood all over my clothes, "Sir, are you
injured?" he called out, "No… I…" suddenly I got up and started running into the
trees. The cop jumped out of his car and began chasing me threw the trees. "Stop
right there!" the cop called as he chased me. I ducked and weaved through the
thick brush and trees. I didn't know what I was doing or why, but there was no
way I was going to let him put my in a jail cell, with all those lights. As I
ran I suddenly came upon a small river. Planning on just running threw it I kept
running. As soon as my foot touched the water it burned with one hundred times
the pain I felt in the light. "Ow, geez. Holy crap!" I called out as I hopped
around on one foot. The cop emerged from the trees and raised his gun towards
me. "Stop right there!" he screamed. Slowly I put my foot down and raised my
hands above my head. He approached me cautiously. As he walked towards me, he
reached around behind his body to grab his handcuffs. That's when I suddenly
leapt towards him and smacked the gun out of his hands. I stood in front of him,
shocked that I had just jumped over 20 feet! He stuttered as he reached for his
pepper spray. I grabbed his head, and dug my teeth into his neck. He screamed
and flailed for a few moments, but then he just stopped. I released my grip, and
he fell to the ground dead.
Blood now covered my mouth. I used my hand to push it all into my mouth; it
tasted so good. I stepped over the dead cop's body and begin walking back to the
road. As I got closer, I noticed another cop car was parked behind his. Two cops
where looking around the trees as well. One flashed his flashlight right on my
face, and it burned painfully. I let a loud groan, and they both heard it.
Suddenly they pulled out their guns are started walking into the forest. I ran
in the opposite direction as fast as I could. Before long I emerged from the
trees, right in the middle of a park. A small number of people where scattered
around the park, but no one was in the immediate area. I took off my blood-
covered jacket and threw it into the trees. I started to walk down the park
sidewalk blending in with the other people.
