A Couple Days Later; A Play in One Scene (<500 words)

School is starting up again in a number of places around the country/world, so I thought I'd post this from one of my busiest periods last year. Mainly posting for fun, but any response is welcome. I realize, also, that I've called this a play, but I do believe it fits better in the fiction section. [edit: though now that I remember it exists, this should probably be on the humor board.]

I liked this piece. It's very pythonesque in the teachers outburst about not grading their papers and student 2 insisting on seeing their graded papers. It's a great piece. I look forward to reading more.

I was in one act plays in highschool and I can certainly say I would have loved to do a piece like this on stage. The only problem I have is with all the pauses near the end. Just me but it seems like dead air. Maybe you could put in student chatter or when the principal walks in the teacher starts to mumble something. Just a thought otherwise great piece.

If you really don't like the way things are run in public schools, you should read about anarchism and alternative schooling, there are a lot of people who think that the current system is basically just a relic of the industrial revolution, and that more community-oriented programs should take place besides the bitter pass or fail grade system. There was also an episode of south park recently which addressed the issue in a rather tactless way.

You ought to continue your story, I'm curious to find out what happens to your wayward teacher. Also this movie worth seeing The class / Entre les murs (200 French (English Subbed) [HD] trailer - YouTube

I agree with Demon on the dead space...eyes widened in surprise...gasp...or something to fill the void .. otherwise great piece! You must be a teacher that has stacks of papers to be graded haunting your every move ; )

Thanks all -- yeah, I agree that it could use some patching up. I like the awkward silence in it, but there probably would have been a better way of conveying it.

@Wryture: I am conflicted about public schools. As a new teacher, I've certainly given it a lot of thought and done a lot of research in the area. If I get a chance, I'll check out your movie, too. And I'm not sure this story goes any further -- it was a good release during a stressful time, however.

The awkward silence at the end worked well but as you said, it might be beneficial to find another way to convey it

    Well done

The characters were very realistic, I've seen atleast a dozen of people like that teacher and student 1 and 2
