First part of a series of themed short stories all in the vein of sentimental dilemma. I do a illustration for each but this one is a Mermaid without a top, so it's obvious I won't be posting that. Please let me know what you think, this is the first in the series, so feedback is very appreciated.
MERMAID BITCH
I've loved men from the dry world, but only in the business sense.
They parade about as if they knew what they were doing.
I hate tourists more than I hate Walt Disney.
But they do provide opportunities.
And as foreigners always believe: attractive foreign women do as well.
But if you want a woman, you gotta pay or learn the language.
One day I noticed a ship still in the water, and a man alone on the deck.
I boarded the vessel, and stood before the man.
He was crying like an infant, and I almost abandoned him right there.
I asked him "What's wrong human?"
He told me his Wife had died moments earlier on the ship.
Just as all seemed hopeless, I found my opening to make my move.
I asked him if he needed the company of a beautiful young lady.
He said nothing.
Figuring he must be slow of hard of hearing, I repeated my offer.
Still nothing.
I asked him if he was sick, and told him that I could heal him and his dead wife.
With that he jumped up and faced me, saying "Please."
I've loved men in the world, but only in the inferior sense...
When he looked at me so urgently with those curious human eyes,
I was for the first time enamored, and could hardly speak let alone lie.
"Human," I managed to say, "Friend, I cannot revive your wife."
He stood there with quiet menace in his face.
Fearing his dismissal, I went on to say, "All I can offer you is myself."
He slowly turned back to his corner, saying, "Get off my boat."
I was paralyzed, as if sick with some human disease.
"Friend," I pleaded, "I will do everything in my power to find this for you."
When he said nothing, I said, "Goodbye."
I looked in every crevace and cavern, and at the deepest parts of the sea,
but I could not find it.
Then one day, many years later, I came upon the power from a cousin of mine.
She said that in order to gain it, I would have to trade my fin for human legs.
I did it without hesitating, and then began my search for the man.
As I searched and waited for the man, word traveled of my odd behavior amongst my sisters,
and they all tried to ask me why I had changed my ways, but I was too embarrassed to say.
Then one day I found him. He was on a yacht standing on the deck.
I boarded and approached him, explaining that I had found the cure.
He looked at me as though I were a stranger; a foreigner even.
"What's that?" He barked, wreaking of human rum. "Who are you?"
I told him, "The cure for your dead wife."
He laughed. "Who?? My new wife is right over there! Cure?"
I explained, "I thought you would want to bring her back to life,
so I found this for you."
He sneered, "Nope! She's not as good as this one anyways!"
I felt paralyzed, and delirious with the emotions I'd had all these years.
His hand found its way to my back, and he whispered, "Man, you ain't too bad yourself."
I walked to the end of the boat. For a few minutes I swayed there.
I looked around.
I found a gun lying on the bench below me.
I then approached him and took his most valuable treasure at gun point.
