What will happen if Iran is attacked?
I've just been reading that the an attack on Iran from the U.S or Israel is increasingly likely.
Iran says any attack would provoke a fierce reaction
Imagine the nuclear disasters if Iran's nuclear plants are attacked. Imagine Iran's response. Imagine what such an attack will do to oil prices. Imagine how many people will die. Imagine what will happen to any kind of peace process across the entire region.
I just can't imagine.............
What do you think?

I believe in the aggressive pursuit of American interests through foreign policy and I wouldn't mind seeing the demise of the current Iranian regime, but I do believe that military action would be a mistake in terms of international standing and would go against my belief that foreign nations ought to be able to pursue their own course until they become militarily hostile. I am not convinced that they pose a sufficient threat to merit a military intervention. I do not think that President Bush should take such an action so close to the end of his term without immediate necessity. I believe that Bush's foreign policy is imperialistic in style (which I disapprove of) while fear-based substantively (which proved wrong in Iraq, for example).
I think any military conflict, while not quite as quick or decisive as the invasion of Iraq, would be similar in scope and result, subject to differences in terrain and territory size. I would envision that the United States would have to maintain a significant longterm presence and that in the ensuing oil flow disruption it would be difficult to avoid the temptation of exercising control over energy fields and that the intervention and toppling of three neighboring middle eastern regimes would cause widespread regional resentment and worry even amongst friendly islamic nations and would destabilize the region further.

I'm pro-intervention generally, I strongly support Afghanistan, and while I didn't support Iraq to begin with, I undertsand that once we're in we have a debt of assistance, for as long as it takes. However, it only works on smaller nations. Iran would be an enormous challenge for the US and the UK all on its own. With two other fronts, forget about it. If we invaded we'd all be completely screwed. You'd see a massive leap in terrorist attacks, possible nuclear attacks on Israel and Iran, and almost every nation in the world taking some form of stance. The Arab league nations would back Iran, and many would pledge their support against our armed forces. I would be absoloute chaos. If it did happen, it could easily be the defining event of the 21st century.

Simple.
Someone - US or Israel - attacks Iran, Iran will obliterate Israel. Then the US, UK, and a whole ton of other nations will be drawn into war. Who's on what side, mind, will be anyone's guess.
Basically, it'll be World War Three. 9/11 times a thousand. That's right - nine hundred and eleven thousand.

We barely have enough troops for Iraq. So if you think we can reinstate the draft and train enough troops in five months, then maybe you need to buy that plane ticket to Canada. I don't think McCain is up for it and we know Obama isn't. There is no coalition, not even the meager one cobbled together for Iraq. And the desire for self-preservation in congress means not enough support there. There also would be resignations among the top military brass. And I actually think the American people aren't going to buy it, despite all the chest pounding you see now. Relax. For now anyway.
I could be wrong. I am sure someone will post a 15 paragraph rebuttal with links to umpteen websites to tell me so. And I might even read it.

You're right - the US nor the UK have the resources to fight another war. But tell that to the governments.

yes we do not have sufficient soldiers unless we let homosexuals serve openly in the military, which is worse than letter Iran go nuclear.

In that case, I think we should draft them and put them at the front lines in fancy day-glo orange uniforms.

I'm pretty sure you're not giving Israel enough credit. They're defenses are probably more amazing then we can even imagine. I've heard that they even have a working system to disable incoming nukes, but that might just be a rumor.
And I pretty much agree with everything Alan said on this issue, so I won't repeat him.
