red pill or blue pill?

so heres the question: would you rather know the truth if it will make you miserable, or be clueless and happy as a clam?

heres an example. your significant other had sex with someone else. they aren't going to leave you for that someone else however. would you rather continue thinking it never happened, this keeping you happy and unaware of anything that has gone wrong, or find out about it and be miserable. perhaps you break up with said significant other, making you both miserable.

this can be applied to a lot of things.

another example: you religion is bull shit, started by some dick who wanted to mess with people. do you want to discover this and pick another religion or lack thereof, or would you prefer to continue being happy and assuming that you will spend eternity in a fluffy place with a deity, 4526 virgins, a vodka volcano, and a stripper factory (thank you bobby)

so, happily ignorant or miserable and enlightened?
red pill or blue pill?

I'd be happy but not ignorant and enlightened but not miserable.

I would much rather have the information, it seems safer.

Why do I get to be Superman?

I'd be...am informed and miserable. At least, I think I'm informed. It's all very perspective driven, and therefore inherently suspect.

If it meant only temporary misery, in the short term not long, then I would then I would prefer knowing.

If it meant either temporary misery in the long term or misery till death, then I would prefer not to know and remain clueless and happy.

There's no such thing as ignorant bliss for me, sadly. I am completely paranoid.

1st: yes

2nd: I put too much research into my faith to be convinced out of it. And usually the people (atheists and hippies) doing the convincing aren't the brightest bulbs in the pack. So I'm safe for a while.

Is this a religion thread in disguise?

I didn't find it religious at all, really. The red pill/blue pill is actually a reference to the movie 'The Matrix'.

I know it's from the Matrix.

A man who fucks your wife is 'someone else'. A man who tries to bring enlightenment is 'some dick'. Opinionated much?

I didn't take the example seriously, it was obviously just meant to be humorous. Nobody but you gave an answer to the question based on their religious beliefs, so I didn't think it would turn into a religious topic.

Given that the average IQ of nonreligious people is higher than that of religious people, I think you are mistaken.

Let's stop this. You're incorrect, Dooga, but let's stop.
The original topic is getting skewered before the second page. And we usually wait till the third.

Oh brother. I'm not a very religious person (I don't remember the last time I was in a church other than for a funeral or a wedding), but I love when people, when engaged in a debate, bring out the unsubstantiated claim that "people who agree with me are smarter than people who agree with you".

1. Does having smart people on your side mean you are right? Especially in matters related to the unknowable?

2. Who exactly is measuring this? If someone conducting a poll asked me either question (are you religious? what is your IQ?), I would respond that it is none of his fucking business on both counts (and I'd imagine 90% of the people don't have a credible measure of their IQ, anyway).

And, in case you didn't know, people who tell pollsters to go fuck themselves have the highest average IQ of all people on the planet. Didn't you know that?
