Prostitution Proudly Persists

I have a few subjects that can set me off on a tangent at a whim. The legalization of prostitution (or lack there of), is one of those issues. I cannot comprehend why anyone would think there should be legal backing for limiting what a person can do with their own body in exchange for money, without directly harming anyone else.

To get a few of the obvious arguments out of the way:

1) Well it does hurt someone, it hurts the family of the person participating in "lewd acts" with the prostitute.

Although this may be true, the government has no business being the "feelings police" and they have absolutely no obligation to assure that a free-willed relationship be "healthy". Certainly, if this were the case, adultery would still be illegal.

2) Allowing prostitution to be legal, makes it easier for child prostitution rings and forced prostitution to persist.

This is simply not true. When you legalize something you can then begin to regulate it. Legalizing prostitution would lift the fear of being legally implicated for reporting awful situations such as forced-prostitution and child prostitution.

3) This is just advocating the spread of disease:

Again, this is not true. Prostitutes (in studies taking place in Nevada, where prostitution is legal) are statistically less likely to contract disease than the rest of the population. This goes back to the regulation factor. When businesses require weekly testing for prostitutes, you make a cleaner and safer experience for everyone. Additionally, if this were within the rights of the government, well then we would have limits on sexual partners as well.

Look, I don't care what your moral compass says, and frankly the goverment shouldn't either. Prostitution is a needlessly dangerous profession. Prostitutes are beaten and killed regularly, and are afraid of reporting it because what they do is illegal. Legalizing prostitution eliminates pimps and allows prostitutes the right to report crimes against them without fear.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

I wouldn't mind if the government doing it: national, state, provincial, local etc... didn't fek up the regulation.

I'm curious how it would affect incomes though because they might be forced to report taxes.

I see no problem with legalizing prostitution, though it would be a little late as it is the oldest profession. I guess the problem with most lies with morality, particularly in countries that are strongly religious. But that's kind of funny because I remember reading something about there being a close relationship with churches and prostitution, up until syphilis started running rampant...But anyways I don't think there is anything wrong with prostitution, but I think would be difficult to tax a prostitute. I mean how can you moniter how many customers someone has had in one day or even moniter what their going rate is? Then again its the same for strippers as well so...dunno.

I think we've already debated this twice in recent months.

Well, do you guys honestly think that if it was legal, that they would continue doing their business walking up and down streets? Trust me, it's not as fun as it looks. In Nevada, the majority of prostitutes are work from home and work from Brothels.

In the case of the brothel, they basically work a Fireman's shift, staying at the brothel for a week, working there as it's needed and then taking off a couple weeks and coming back.

In terms of taxing for the work-at-home prostitutes, it would be no different than taxing a freelance graphic designer, piano teacher, or writer for that matter.

You'll have to forgive my lateness. I haven't been around for a long time, and I definitely am not about to read two years of missed posts. I think you'll also find that all points of debate and discussion will cover the same basic subject matter, and will all eventually return faithfully.

If it does indeed bother you, feel free to not reply.

Yeah, you are new, people will reply when they are bothered for sure. You need thick armor here.

Good luck, I'm still upgrading my armor personally...

I'm sure you could find some people who would
enjoy working as prostitutes.

I'm not sure if the majorty would tell you they looked forward to being a prosititute since they were a little girl (or boy). So on that note, I don't generally approve of legalizing prostitution. On the other hand, I can't possibly be sure of the motives of anyone, so I suppose it's self-righteous of me to pronounce judgement on the practice and/or it's participants.

Wow, this is totally weird. I was just going to post this for a debate. I brought this issue up in class but no one answered me. Well, anyways...

I think its totally uncalled for to make prostituation illegal. Its your body, why should tye government tell you what to do with it? Its not hurting anyone besides the actual prostitute (well unless they somehow enjoy it) I think it would also get rid of other crimes like abusive pimps because the girls (or boys) can come forward to the police because they are doing nothing wrong.

Also, I find it weird that porn is legal while prostituation is not. They are basically being paid for the same thing.

That's right, it is your body... but is it your choice? Now, I undertand it's practically impossible at the moment to come up with a way to end prostitution, and I mean end it because it shouldn't be necessary for prostitutes to practice it, not end it because it's currently illegal. So sure, "regulation" sounds like a great idea...

Yeah, I think that's a pretty sweeping generalization. I guarantee you that you will find more people that want to be sex workers than, let's say trash men.

Do you honestly think that people who work in the sex industry all feel like their jobs are forced onto them?

Some people, actually enjoy their jobs as sex workers. Obviously, you wouldn't. I know that is difficult to understand. But if you tell someone, you can either have sex for money or answer phones, wait tables ETC, many people would much prefer having sex. And those people find themselves working in the sex industry.

Sure there maybe a small minority of women who get a real deep thrill out of having sex with old fat guys with personal hygeine issues. But the rest, only if viewed from your ivory tower.

The real truth of the matter is that most prostitutes do what they do to support drug habits. Others are forced into it. Others have a long history of abuse and find it difficult to relate to people any other way.

I think prostitution should be legalised not for any moral reason, or for taxation, but because it would afford the girls a level of protection they don't currently have. Health checks, counselling, refuges, detox, should all be part of the system.

It still won't clear up all the problems, and a lot will stay underground, but it's a start.

And next time you visit a hooker, Annoying, don't kid yourself that she does it cause she likes you and she loves what you do. She's just paying the bills.
